2020 Toyota Highlander recall for faulty airbags
Both the 2020 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid are being recalled due to having side airbag malfunctions. Luckily this recall only affects 3,121 SUVs, but it’s still a dangerous problem that needs to be corrected.
The front passenger seat may have had an incorrect piece of seat trim installed. As a result, it may prevent the seat-mounted side airbag from deploying. This could increase the risk of injuries during a crash. Currently, Toyota suggests it doesn’t know of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
Toyota will begin notifying owners in December! The middle of December, to be exact, conveniently just smack dab in the middle of the holidays. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website here.
You will need to enter your 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the site. You can find your 2020 Toyota Highlander VIN near the driver’s side on the windshield.
What do I do if my Highlander is at risk?
If your Toyota Highlander is at risk, you will need to schedule a maintenance appointment with a Toyota dealership. You do not have to go to the same dealership where you purchased your Toyota Highlander Hybrid or gas-powered SUV.
Scheduling your appointment in advance will reduce the amount of time you’ll have to spend waiting. It will also be an excellent way to learn about what Coronavirus (COVID-19) precautions the dealership is taking.
If your 2020 Toyota highlander is found to be at risk, the incorrect piece of fabric in the trim will be removed and replaced for free. Luckily, it should be a quick fix. You’ll then be able to relax on trips to visit family and friends while knowing that your airbags are functioning correctly.
Other Toyota Highlander recalls
This isn’t the first recall for the 2020 Toyota Highlander, so there may be other issues that need to be fixed. In March 2020, Toyota issued a recall for the 2020 Highlander due to having a fuel system error.
2020 Toyota Highlander models equipped with the 2.5-liter V6 gasoline engine may have an engine control unit programming error. As a result, gas may not be correctly injected into the engine while using the stop and restart feature.
This could cause your vehicle to stall while you’re in traffic, increasing the risk of injury and accidents. 38,000 Toyota Highlander models are at risk for this problem, but the Hybrid models are not at risk.
If your Highlander is at risk, take it to a Toyota Dealership. They will update the vehicle’s engine software. Also, until you can bring your Highlander in, you can turn off the auto start-stop function after starting it.
