This EV Is More Expensive To Insure Than a Model S Plaid
Insuring an electric vehicle (EV) can be costly compared to similar internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. However, it gets even more expensive when you take top-tier luxury or performance EVs into consideration. Still, even with the cartoonish speed of the range-topping Tesla Model S Plaid, there’s a luxury EV out there that’s even more expensive to insure. Here’s a little about the Audi RS e-tron GT and how it stacks up against the Model S Plaid.
What is the Plaid version of the Tesla Model S?
The Tesla Model S is the EV marque’s flagship sedan, and the Plaid is the latest in the lineup of comically fast Model S performance variants. The Plaid produces 1,020 horsepower in a dual-motor platform. As a result, Tesla claims the 4,828-lb four-door EV sedan can hit 60 mph in a blistering 1.9 seconds. However, you’ll pay for that performance; Car and Driver says the bleeding-edge Tesla luxury car starts at $137,440.
Is the Tesla Model S Plaid expensive to insure?
As you might expect, the Tesla Model S Plaid demands a much higher premium to insure than lesser Model S EVs and Model 3s. According to Insure.com, the Model S Plaid has a national average insurance rate of $4,115 annually. That puts it just behind a Porsche Panamera Turbo in terms of average annual insurance rates. However, it’s not the king of EV hill regarding bloated coverage plans; Insure.com identifies the Audi RS e-tron GT as one of the most expensive BEVs to insure.
How much is an Audi RS e-tron GT to insure?
The Audi RS e-tron GT has a national average rate of $4,150 annually. While it’s not much more than the Model S Plaid, it is still a hefty amount for insurance. However, considering the RS e-tron GT starts at $143,445, an insurance premium that steep starts to make sense. Of course, even with the high prices, the Audi RS e-tron GT can’t keep up with the Plaid.
In Car and Driver testing, the Audi EV hit 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and accomplished 0.93 g in a roadholding evaluation on the 300-ft skidpad. However, the Tesla Model S Plaid smashed those scores, with a roadholding metric of 1.08 g. The Tesla is faster, sharper, and offers a more extended range than the Audi RS e-tron GT.
What other EVs are expensive to insure?
In addition to these two tire-scorching EV luxury sedans and their average insurance rates, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S also demands a premium. Specifically, the four-door Porsche has a national average annual insurance rate of $4,028. However, in terms of hybrids, yet another Porsche makes the list. Insurance.com says the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Executive demands an average of $4,221 annually, making it even steeper than the Model S Plaid to cover.
