The SEMA auto show is an annual event held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Along with many auto representatives, celebrities, and car accessory manufacturers, you can also find special concept cars that may not ever be available for purchase. Some of our favorites from this year include Ford’s F-100 and the Maximus Jeep Gladiator.

Another cool vehicle showcased at SEMA was the Ford Ranger Overland Camper. It’s just like a regular Ranger, except this one has all the supplies you need to set up camp in your truck bed.

New features of this Ford Ranger

This special Ranger is decked out with camping supplies, performance suspension, and towing enhancements. The collection of custom parts was put together by Hellwig, a suspension part manufacturer, which used a Ranger XLT and dubbed it the “Attainable Adventure” Ranger. 

To increase its performance, the Attainable Adventure got 17-inch Icon Alloy Compression wheels with 35-inch Falken Wildpeak tires. A set of Bushwacker Fender Flares covers the wheels. Hellwig also added an Icon Dynamics Stage 5 suspension for smoother driving over rocky terrain. 

For extra rough roads, the truck has front and rear bumpers made by Addictive Desert Designs. The company Rigid supplies a light bar and another set of LED bulbs to give the truck bed its own campfire glow. The car also sports a custom paint job and unique T-Rex X-Metal grille.

The ultimate camper

Starting from the top, we have a bed rack and awning made by Yakima, which can comfortably support a roof tent from Tepui Hybox on top. BedSlides were installed to hold this Ranger’s Trail Kitchen and ARB refrigerator.

A Rigid rack on the side holds a foldable table as well as a few mountain bikes. To keep everything running, the truck has solar panels and a Yeti 1400 power station from GoalZero.

The Ford Ranger’s price

The Ranger XLT is considered a middle ground between the base and pricier trims, retailing for around $35,000. With all the camping attachments installed by Hellwig, MotorTrend estimated that the price would rise to $45,000.

This doesn’t include all the custom performance parts, which would likely cost an extra few thousand dollars. Still, the design gives drivers an idea of how to plan out a bed camper for their own Ranger or similar truck.

Off-roading performance

In addition to accommodating a full-sized campsite in its truck bed, the Ranger can handle any obstacle on the road. It has a four-cylinder 2.3-liter engine that produces 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The 10-speed gives drivers enough gears to navigate tough situations, like descending steep inclines or fording through shallow water. Rear-wheel-drive is standard with the option to upgrade to four-wheel-drive. An available off-roading package includes a locking rear differential, terrain management, skid plates, crawl control, off-roading tires, and a new special suspension system.

Hauling and towing

Regardless of which cab you get, the Ranger comes with a 6-foot-long truck bed, adequate space for a few nights in the wilderness. On the XLT, the maximum payload capacity is 1,609 pounds, so you’ll have no problem transporting heavy gear. As for towing, the Ranger can pull up to 7,500 pounds, which is impressive for a compact truck.
