Americans are obsessed with the Subaru Outback. If we think station wagon, often the first image that comes to mind is of an Outback generation. But there’s another wagon that may not deserve to be ignored.

It can be hard to compete with something so iconic. That’s why Buick’s wagon, the Regal TourX has been widely ignored.

SUVs are the most popular category of vehicle sold in the U.S. and Buick is going with the flow by taking its Regal sedan and wagon out of production after the 2020 model year. According to Autoblog, there just isn’t enough demand for the continued production of these models, so Buick is finished with them here in the states.

The Buick Regal TourX

The Buick Regal TourX is part of the sixth generation Regal that released in 2018. Following suit with others like the Subaru Outback or the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, the Regal TourX has some rugged additions to its body and a suspension that lends a few inches more ground clearance than a sedan.

A side by side comparison of these three by MotorTrend shows the Buick wagon is competitive in its class. Its standard AWD is powered by a 250 horsepower turbo charged 4 cylinder engine.

At $29,370 starting, the Buick Regal TourX was introduced with the intention of bridging the gap between mainstream and luxury. Its roomy cargo boasts a maximum capacity of 73.5 cubic feet of trunk space. Its gas prices fit right in between the Outback and the Golf Alltrack, as well.

MotorTrend reported Buick Regal TourX gets a “real mpg” of 18.2 in the city 32.3 on the highway, and 22.6 overall. In addition, the Regal TourX is said to be an enjoyable driving experience –– smooth with hardly any road noise.

Additionally, being the wagon that it is, the TourX is a capable car with ample cargo. But it doesn’t sacrifice convenience. The Buick Regal TourX has a comfortably low rear load floor as well as an easily accessible roof height for rack loading.

Where does it fall short?

Safety features such as adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist are offered, but not standard. While its upscale leather interior does come equipped with and 8 inch screen and connective infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, the Buick Regal TourX only sports these features after an upgrade.

Sure, it has a competitively low starting price but its base model is devoid of extras compared to others in its class. Reviews complain of a sluggish transmission, and an interior that –– while upscale enough –– doesn’t compete with the likes of Volvo or Mercedes.

These stats show some pretty dismal numbers. 2019 sales moved 10,363 units and the year before that sold 14,117. Compare that to the sales numbers of America’s most popular station wagon –– the Subaru Outback –– which sold 181,178 and 178,854 units in 2019 and 2018 respectively. This discrepancy is proof that the Buick Regal TourX is ignored among others in its class.

Buick Regal TourX discontinued

Though after the 2020 model the Buick Regal TourX will no longer be available in the US, you’ll see it in other global markets for a few years yet.

The Chinese market, where sedans still hold larger popularity, will still offer the Buick Regal line. In addition, the Regal TourX will be seen across Europe in its other version. Opel continues to produce this wagon’s sister as the Insignia.
