This Is the Best-Selling Tesla Model
Tesla has been a force to reckon with in the automotive game. Their electric vehicles weren’t expected to make too much of a splash, but that proved to be wrong as more people scrambled to get one of their own.
Currently, the top sellers are the Model 3, Model S, and Model X. When you compare the three, it might not be much of a surprise that the biggest seller of those three is the Model 3. Why do you think that is? CNET.com RoadShow compared the three electric cars and shed some light on the subject.
Tesla Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling model this automaker has. Probably because it gives the best performance, has the best quality interior, and offers better road handling than any of the others.
But, the fact that they offer all that for the least amount of money, puts it at the top, as Motor Trend called it their car of the year for 2018, and it’s a finalist for 2020 as well. They keep features pretty low key to offer a low selling price, but you still get more than enough to justify buying one of these.
Prices range from approximately $39,000 all the way to the top level, which is $59,000. The battery range, however, isn’t as good as the Model S. The top-level gets you around 310 miles, but the most basic model comes in with 240 miles.
Sales figures for the Model 3 have been mind-blowing. CarSalesBase reports that in 2017, people bought only 1,700 models, but fast forward to 2019 and the figure skyrockets to 158,925 sold. Obviously, Tesla’s doing something right with this one to make it so popular.
Tesla Model S
The Tesla Model S has the longest range on a battery than any of the others, at least at the highest tier. Base Prices range, according to CNET.com, from $75,000 to over $100,000, depending on which level of the Model S you purchase.
While you get some handy equipment, like the HEPA filter system, it’s questionable as to whether the higher prices are worth putting into this particular model. Maybe the Standard tier with base package equipment might be okay if you’re not bothered by the 285-mile range on the lowest level battery.
As for sales, the Tesla Model S had a steady rise in purchases from their 2014 version all the way up to their 2016 model. That year, they capped at 29,421 sales, a large increase from the 16,698 purchases from the 2014 model year.
When 2017 rolled around, however, sales started decreasing and ended that year with barely over 27,000 sales. The 2018 model didn’t fare any better, coming in about 1,300 less than the previous year. But, the worst year yet, was the 2019 model, only bringing in 14,100 purchases, which is significantly less than the year before.
Tesla Model X
The Tesla Model X is the crossover version that offers an optional third-row seat, which would enable you to seat up to 7 people. It’s the top of the line of all the Tesla models, which, of course, means it’s the most expensive of the group, coming at a few thousand dollars higher than the Model S.
The Model X doesn’t quite have the battery range that the Model S does, though. The highest it’s rated for falls in the 305-mile range, but it’s still plenty if you live near a Tesla charging station.
The price for the X version ranges from about $80,000 to over $120,000, depending on which particular model you go for. From 2015 to 2018, sales steadily rose. But, in 2019, sales went down to 19,225 purchases, which is almost a 7,000 unit difference from the previous year. The falcon-winged doors and the other over-the-top light dance novelties seemed to have worn off on Tesla buyers.
When comparing the three Tesla electric car models, it’s obvious the Model 3 is the clear winner. Tesla produced a great performing car and kept costs down, so buyers wouldn’t have to spend a ton of money to enjoy it. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the new creations they plan to roll out soon. Will they sell better than the Model 3?
