This One Feature Makes the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel the Best
Electric vehicles may be economically appealing, but diesel trucks have a special place in the hearts of many drivers, and they aren’t going to switch over any time soon.
It’s also a great reason for automakers to step up their game and create a superior diesel truck. That’s what makes the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel so appealing. It’s a diesel truck that doesn’t break the bank every time you hit the pumps.
According to MotorTrend, the 2020 Ram EcoDiesel has some great features that are drawing in even more consumers. In addition to the quiet ride, here are four other features that MotorTrend loved about the Ram’s new engine.
Quieter ride
Some drivers love to hear an engine rev. It brings to mind images of hitting the race track and leaving your competitors in the dust as you peel away from the starting line. We associate it with a powerful engine, and in some cases it is. Interestingly enough, the Washington Post reported that some automakers are faking this growl through specialized pipes rather than a powerful engine.
Not everyone finds loud, heavy engines very appealing, however.
For consumers who want something on the quieter side, the Ram 1500 could be exactly what you’re looking for.
So how did Ram accomplish this? According to MotorTrend, “When looking under the hood, there is more plastic and sound-deadening foam than we’ve ever seen in any other pickup engine.” While many people prefer metal parts that can take more of a beating, only time will tell if the plastic holds up well.
Turbo power
One of the biggest complaints from truck owners is lag, especially if you’ve just recently made the switch from a muscle car. It’s a valid point. When you press the gas, you want to go.
Ram took this into consideration when redesigning the new Ram 1500.
MotorTrend reports, “The turbocharger is an all-new water-cooled, variable vane Garrett design that can spool up faster and provide more consistent power over a longer period of time.” This allows the Ram 1500 to have less lag time, and even better, allows the Ram to have greater fuel economy.
Stronger/lighter block
One of the new trends hitting the auto world is more power with less weight. This has resulted in many automakers switching from heavy metal frames to aluminum, as well as trying to switch out other heavy materials for lighter.
In the case of the 2020 Ram 1500, Motor Trend reports, “Although the new EcoDiesel engine continues to utilize compacted graphite iron for block material, engine builders went through thousands of computer models to remove even more unnecessary weight and thickness where it wasn’t specifically needed.”
This resulted in an engine that is 15 lbs lighter, smaller, and far less noisy.
Superior burn
Driving your Ram 1500 is not going to give you a superior burn, although this would be extremely cool. What we mean by a superior burn is that the 2020 Ram 1500 works more efficiently.
So how did Ram pull this off? According to Motor Trend, engineers added aluminum piston heads to the engine. The addition of faster injectors, which are controlled by a Bosch computer, as well as a newly designed combustion chamber creates a superior burn to previous models of the Ram. The result? Better mpgs and a more low-end power.
High/low fuel recirculation
Another fad hitting the truck world is fewer emissions. One reason is that it can save you money, according to the Environmental Defense Fund. Another reason is that the green movement is having a huge impact across the nation, and contrary to popular opinion, automakers are listening.
Ram has managed to create an engine that doesn’t steal an excessive amount of exhaust gas from the turbo. This allows more exhaust gas to head downstream, which results in fewer emissions and a superior cooling efficiency system.
