This Pickup Gets More Speeding Tickets Than Any Other Truck
Speeding; the perfect crime. Well, that’s not true at all. But it is probably the crime we all do the most. Driving is fun. Driving fast is also fun. It turns out we aren’t allowed to drive as fast as we want, and if we do, we get one of the least fun pieces of paper on earth; a speeding ticket. But of all of the fast, sporty, and flashy cars in the world, how come trucks get tickets more than most cars?
Trucks either attract people who feel the need to drive fast or cops or maybe both. Either way, we know pickups get a lot of tickets. But which pickup gets the most tickets?
The culprits
MotorTrend released a new list of the top 10 vehicles that get the most speeding tickets. Of the top 10, the Dodge Ram 2500 has dropped from sixth place to eight place. Even though the Ram has gotten fewer tickets, it’s still the only truck in the top 10, making it the truck still caught speeding the most.
MotorTrend says that 14.79 percent of Ram 2500 owners reports getting tickets in the truck. I know what you might be thinking, “ but there’s nothing sporty or even really fast about this truck.” And you’d be right, but it’s not about the capability of the vehicle.
How fast can a Ram 2500 even go?
The Ram 2500 has had plenty of changes over the years, and MotorTrend doesn’t specify which model got tickets, but the typical Ram 1500 setup is rocking a torquey V8. If we look at the 2020 Ram 2500 HD, which won MT’s 2020 Truck of the year, this is a powerful vehicle. The Ram 2500 and 3500 both come standard with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 making 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. Granted, the Ram 2500 is a three-quarter-ton truck, but that is still a lot of snap.
Remember, hitting a bazillion miles per hour is not how most folks get speeding tickets. The Ram 2500, like most trucks, has an electronically governed top speed. Again, the top speed ain’t it. The fun is in the snappy torque of that Hemi.
At least for highway speeds, ABC6 did a study to determine how fast the majority of speeding tickets were in a particular county in Ohio. They found that the majority of the tickets were around 15 mph over the speed limit. And a close second was within 10 mph of the speed limit. You see, you don’t need a Ferarri to run 85 mph in a 70 mph zone. It’s that torquey snap of a strong pickup that is to blame.
More Ram 2500 specs
In fairness, there are other motor options for the Ram 2500 that are less powerful. Even the 6.5-liter Hemi V8 has a mode that switches off half of the cylinders to converse fuel. This function obviously cuts power as well. Now, the Cummins turbodiesel has less horsepower at 370, but a ticket printing 850 lbs-ft of torque. Again this isn’t a necessarily fast, vehicle but I promise all that torque would have most drivers wanting to pin it back a time or two.
Which car got the most speeding tickets?
According to MotorTrend’s list, while the Ram got more speeding tickets than any other pickup, there are plenty of cars that get way more tickets. The 7th place spot went to the Dodge Challenger. Hyundai picked up 6th with the Veloster. Mopar continuing its outlaw run at 5th with the Dart. 4th place went to the Infinity G37 hot doggers. Subaru got 3rd with the Impreza. 2nd place goes to the hot hatch crew with the Volkswagen GTI. And, topping the list with 20.49 percent of drivers getting tickets, the Subaru WRX.
