In 2020, Jeep is giving us two new special editions for the Wrangler JL. One of the new models, the Willys Edition, you last saw as part of the JK generation of Wrangler. The other is the new Black and Tan limited edition.

Both new offerings are based on the Wrangler JL Sport S trim configuration. While that’s not a base model, it’s not exactly the higher level Rubicon or Sahara models either.

Why is the new Black and Tan Edition the perfect throwback Jeep?

The Black and Tan Edition

Most of the features of the special edition Jeep Wrangler models are cosmetic. In the case of the Black and Tan Edition, they get a throwback look that many will find very appealing.

It offers 17-inch Machine Granite wheels with all-terrain tires. It has a premium tan soft top, Heritage Tan cloth upholstery, and a Wizard Black instrument panel. You also get side steps and low-gloss exterior badging. The Technology Group is included here, which gives you a 7-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch instrument display standard, and dual-zone climate control.

While it’s called the Black and Tan Edition, the name doesn’t mean you’re limited to that color scheme. You can actually get any of the Wrangler Sport S colors offered for the exterior. You are stuck, however, with the one palette for the interior. It’s available as both a two-door ($34,435) and four-door configuration ($37,935).

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler

The new 2020 Jeep Wrangler models combine a unibody construction that rides more like a comfy car and weighs less with better handling. That’s the good news. The bad news is that while it gained in those areas, it’s less rugged and capable of off-roading. 

Still, for those who want an SUV that’s incredibly versatile, they really don’t need to look any further than Jeep Wrangler. 

The latest Wrangler JL can do off-road driving, but it can do so much more. Despite its rugged construction, it’s perfectly suited to be an on-road family vehicle. The seats offer good support, and the interior is much nicer than previous models of the Wrangler.

At the end of the day, it’s still an iconic Jeep, and what other SUVs can really match it?

But if it’s off-roading you’re interested in, the 2020 Wrangler has you covered. The new Wrangler models are rugged enough and have a huge aftermarket following. The Rubicon trim level offers big all-terrain tires, locking differentials, and a front stabilizer bar that is electronically disconnecting.

The Jeep Wrangler isn’t without its drawbacks. While it’s capable and has personality in spades, it’s a stiffer ride, and they can be plenty noisy when compared to similar SUVs and crossovers.

Updated powertrains

Many will be excited by Jeep changing up its powertrain lineup. In 2020, the Wrangler gets a diesel engine and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 like those in the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. The Wrangler’s diesel engine puts out 260 hp with 442 lb-ft of torque. It will be available in four-door models.

You can also get the mild-hybrid eTorque system with the Sahara trim level only. It uses a 48-volt belt-starter generator that helps balance the torque band of this particular engine. It can be combined with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6.

With the base V6 engine, you get a six-speed manual transmission with an eight-speed automatic transmission as an option. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engines are paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new diesel engine will be available with the off-road Rubicon trim along with the Sahara and Sport.

With its charming throwback appearance and a pretty generous offering of features and options, the new special edition Black and Tan Edition of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is sure to be a hit among Jeep and SUV fans.
