In a time when most auto manufacturers are switching away from sedans in favor of bigger vehicles like SUVs and trucks, what’s left for drivers who prefer small cars? Even though bigger vehicles have recently become more and more popular, there will always be people who are more partial to smaller rides from manufacturers like Toyota.

The Toyota Yaris offers a lot in its small package

 U.S. News listed the Toyota Yaris as the fifth smallest car on the market in 2020. Rolling up at only 171.2 inches long, the 2020 Yaris packs a lot into such a small package. The only cars available today that are smaller than the 2020 Yaris are the 2021 MINI Cooper Clubman, the 2020 Honda Fit, the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic, the 2021 MINI Cooper, the 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage, and the 2021 Chevrolet Spark.

U.S. News particularly liked how easy it was to maneuver and the overall agility the Yaris had to offer in their test drive. Other features they listed as note-worthy include excellent fuel economy (32/40 mpg city/highway), good reliability, a stylish and comfortable interior, and a good amount of cargo space for the size.

If you’re looking for a small car, the Toyota Yaris might be for you

One of the best things about the 2020 Toyota Yaris is that it comes packed with a ton of great features, even at the standard level. In the technology department, you’ll find a 7-inch touchscreen display and a six-speaker audio system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are available at all levels, as are standard Bluetooth phone connectivity and streaming audio; things that are often only found on higher trim levels of the Yaris’ competitors.

In terms of safety, the Yaris has scored well. The 2020 Toyota Yaris comes standard with a forward-collision warning and a reverse camera, but more advanced features are optional, such as blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a lane-departure warning. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the 2020 Yaris five out of five stars for safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated it as “good” in its crash tests.

A notable addition for 2020 is the new hatchback model. Whereas the standard sedan Yaris offers 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space, the hatchback version offers 15.8 cubic feet. So if you’re concerned that the Yaris may be too small for you and your family, the hatchback is another great option with a little more room for your things.

What’s the price?

The Toyota Yaris is available at five different trim levels. The L sedan, the lowest trim level, costs $15,650. Next up, the LE sedan has a price tag of $16,650. The XLE is available starting at $18,750. The LE hatchback, which is new this year, starts at $17,750. Finally, the XLE hatchback has a price tag of $18,750.

If you’ve never joined in on the SUV frenzy, don’t worry — there are still plenty of small cars available for you! The 2020 Toyota Yaris clearly has a lot to offer, as do other subcompact cars in the same category. While it’s true that automakers have taken a step back from producing smaller vehicles, it’s hard to imagine a world where they’re gone completely. So, get out there and enjoy your better fuel economy!
