From the Ford Transit to Euro-only Fiats and Renaults, there are plenty of cargo and passenger vans ready for camper duty. But the Mercedes Sprinter is arguably the king of the RV conversion scene. Sprinter camper vans run the gamut from luxury RVs priced like homes to toughened-up overlanding rigs. And somewhere in the middle, you’ll find a Mercedes Sprinter like Thor Motor Couch’s Tranquility van.

Thor Motor Coach turns Mercedes Sprinter vans into off-road-ready camper vans

Indiana-based Thor Motor Coach doesn’t only work with Mercedes Sprinter vans. The company’s product lineup includes Class A and C RVs as well as Class B ones. And Thor also offers Class B vans built on Ram Promasters. But whether you go with the Ram or the Mercedes-Benz, Thor’s vans aren’t just pavement-cruising luxury barges, MotorTrend notes.

Thor Motor Coach builds two vans on the Mercedes Sprinter platform: the Tranquility and the Sanctuary. Mechanically, they’re identical. The company says their only differences are dealership availability and styling tweaks. As a result, while the Thor Tranquility is the focus of this article, the same features and build process applies to the Sanctuary.

Both are based on diesel-powered Mercedes Sprinter 2500 4x4s and have the same interior and exterior dimensions. The Tranquility and Sanctuary both have two-person sleeping capacities, too. And they have the same seating and seatbelt capacities: the 19P has belts for 5, while the 19L only has 4.

Besides their number of belts, the 19P and 19L also differ in their floorplan arrangements. The 19P has a bench in the back that electronically folds out into a bed. In contrast, the 19L has a fixed bed in the back, which means the seating area is in the middle. But regardless of which trim you pick, Thor Motor Coach equips them well for living the van life.

Off-road tires are optional on the Thor Tranquility. The Thule roof-mounted ladder and rails, as well as the power-operated awning with integrated LED lighting, are standard, though. So is the Thule bike rack. Thor also adds side steps, a sewer hose, and a top-mounted LED light bar. Plus, the van has all the same standard features as a Mercedes Sprinter 2500 4×4, including a backup camera, keyless entry, swivel front seats, and heated mirrors.

Inside, the Thor Tranquility has a dual-burner gas cooktop, microwave, 12-volt fridge, and stainless-steel sink. The kitchen area also has a fold-out table, fire extinguisher, and power-operated ceiling vent. Meanwhile, the bathroom has a cassette toilet, shower, sink, and power-operated vent. And the rear is separated from the rest of the van by a screen door. LED lighting is everywhere, and to keep the occupants safe, there are LPG, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors.

When it’s time to stop exploring the outdoors, the converted Mercedes Sprinter has a 24” TV, JBL audio system, and built-in WiFi. Also, Thor Motor Coach says the Tranquility is cable- and satellite-TV ready. Plus, there are numerous USB charging ports scattered throughout the interior. And to keep things warm even in winter, the van has Truma Combi Eco 14,300-BTU furnace and water heater.

To power all of this, the Thor Tranquility has a 190W solar panel with a 3-kW power inverter, 400-Ah lithium-ion battery packs, and a 170-amp alternator. And if you’re staying at an RV camp, there’s a 30W detachable shoreline power cord. Plus, the Tranquility has the usual exterior water and LPG connections. The van holds 24 lbs of LPG and 4.75 gallons of wastewater. But while the Tranquility 19L holds 24 gallons of freshwater, the 19P only holds 19 gallons.

How much does one of these camper vans cost?

Getting into one of Thor Motor Coach’s converted Mercedes Sprinters doesn’t come cheap. Though these camper vans aren’t exactly the most expensive Sprinter-based RVs on the market, either.

The Thor Tranquility 19P starts at $148,680. With its different sleeping arrangement and extra water capacity, the 19L costs slightly more at $151,060. The Sanctuary van trims cost the same.
