Tesla, Hertz, and Tom Brady made waves earlier this week when the companies announced the partnership. Tesla plans on supplying Hertz with 100,000 Tesla electric vehicles, while Uber will have access to about 50,000 of those by 2023. What are the stipulations that will allow Uber drivers to hop into a Tesla? A high score and a few trips under the belt are crucial.

In the wake of the Tom Brady partnership, Hertz also announced the company would supply Uber with 50,000 vehicles by 2023. Next Monday, Uber says that drivers looking to rent a car through Hertz will have access to Tesla vehicles in certain areas. Those areas include Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Washington, DC.

Elon Musk said he would not give Hertz a discount on the purchase, but it sounds like taxes were a big incentive. Up first, the Tesla Model 3 will be available to rent before the program expands further. Uber drivers will be able to rent the 2021 Model 3 for $334 a week from Hertz. The price is expected to go down to $299 at some point. Drivers will have to have a 4.7-star rating to rent the EV, plus a minimum of 150 trips.

Uber is working towards an electric fleet much like Hertz

Right now, internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE) make up a large portion of Uber vehicles. The company is working toward having an electric fleet, much like the goals of Hertz.

“While this partnership is a step forward to advance electrification on the Uber platform, it’s important to note that owning an electric vehicle is still too often more expensive than a traditional gas-powered vehicle.”

Andrew Macdonald | SVP of mobility and business operations

This partnership will give drivers a way to jump into an electric vehicle outside of the traditional lease or purchase options. This way, the fleet benefits from the EV, and so does the driver without the financial impact. According to the Uber press release, “This is the largest expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) on a mobility platform in North America and one of the largest globally, marking another step toward Uber’s zero-emissions goal.”

These vehicles will have access to the Tesla Supercharger network

November 1st will bring the first round of Tesla available for rent. Uber says that hopefully, this will get more customers used to the electric vehicle as travel increases during the holidays. “We believe this will be a win-win for drivers who rent: a chance to both increase earnings and reduce environmental impact,” Uber noted.

In addition to the savings in gas, Uber’s Green Future program offers further discounts. The company provides drivers $1 more a trip for using EVs, adding up to around $4,000 annually. Drivers will have access to the full Tesla Supercharger network, plus a 25% discount from EVgo.

Interested parties can check out the service through Uber. The rental through Hertz offers insurance and basic maintenance. Plus, drivers can pick the length of time to rent the Tesla depending on individual schedules.
