After racking up 200,000 reservations, the ordering books for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning have been officially closed. So, if you wanted to get behind the wheel of the first electric Ford truck, you might be out of luck.
The Ford build and price tool is still active but mentions that the 2022 model year is no longer available due to high demand. However, you might be able to find one at your local dealership. Canceled orders could be available, but they might have an incredibly steep markup.
Hopefully, this won’t be a problem for long. Ford is working on solutions to ramp up production. Also, the ordering books for the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning might open this summer. On that note, 2023 Ford Maverick orders are expected to open in August.
How is Ford Lightning production increasing?
It seems like the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning production is in a pickle. Ford is working on producing up to over 80,000 units a year, but that doesn’t seem to cut it with 200,000 reservations racked up. It does help close the gap between supply and demand a little bit, though.
Initially, Ford only planned to build 40,000 electric trucks per year, but demand for the Lightning exploded. The help build more EV trucks, Ford added a new part of its Rouge manufacturing complex to build 150,000 models a year.
Ford is launching an electric vehicle production complex in Tennessee with the goal of opening it by 2024. According to Reuters, This plant will be much larger than the extension at the Rouge facility.
Ford executives shared that they are still urging the Biden administration and Congress for increased Federal support for electric vehicle sales along with United States battery and battery minerals production.
Bill Ford, Ford Executive Chair and great-grandson of Henry Ford, explained that Ford is considering directly investing in battery materials production. Plus, supply chain issues have hindered production like a tough defensive line stops a football team’s momentum.
How long is the wait for the F-150 Lightning?
The waitlist for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning could be up to three years. Some models aren’t expected to arrive until 2024. The first customer deliveries are expected to begin this spring, and production did officially start this week.
Over 2,300 Ford EV-certified dealers across the U.S. will sell the all-electric F-150 in four trim levels with two different battery options. However, display units may not arrive for a few more weeks.
Ford has been using them to promote the F-150 Lightning at different events across the country. It’s been a hit at the New York Auto Show, Chicago Auto Show, and more.
