Replacing the outgoing CX-9, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 starts with the standard 3.3 Turbo Select trim. With a starting price of $39,595, the base model has a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six mild hybrid engine system making 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. It gets 24 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined.

Although this SUV drives and handles well, the CX-90’s best parts are in the cabin. This three-row SUV seats up to eight people. It has a stylish interior design, and synthetic leather upholstery is standard. As for tech, it has a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster display, and a suite of advanced safety features Mazda calls i-Activsense.

The top 2024 Mazda CX-90 trim is the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus. Starting at around $60,000, it boasts a significant upgrade under the hood. It still has a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six, but Mazda sport-tuned the output to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Despite that extra power, the top trim’s fuel economy is almost the same as the standard setup.

According to Mazda, the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus also adds Nappa leather upholstery. However, its seating capacity is cut to six due to its three rows of captain’s chairs. The first two rows are heated, as is the steering wheel. This trim also boasts a 12-speaker premium audio system, and the infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster measure 12.3 inches.

Expect more advanced driver-assistance systems too. They include a rear-seat reminder and Mazda’s Cruising and Traffic Support.

Overall, these upgrades provide a more luxurious experience. But are they worth an extra $20,000 over the base model? Not every household needs a fully loaded CX-90. Indeed, Car and Driver reviewers don’t recommend the top trim for most shoppers. Instead, they prefer the lowest trim with the sport-tuned powertrain: the 3.3 Turbo S.
