With the average price of new pickup trucks heading north of $40,000, more buyers are realizing the benefits and advantages of purchasing used versus new. While consumers shopping the used market will find a variety of price ranges, cost savings is not the only issue when considering the purchase of a used pickup.

Having been proven dependable over many years of production, today’s trucks are built to last. There’s a wide selection of pre-owned pickups with many of the options, styling, and advanced technology found in new trucks. Shopping the used market offers the advantage of exploring and comparing models to suit your budget.

According to CarMax, pickup trucks are more popular than ever. Here are the top ten pickups under $25,000 on today’s market.

Ram 1500 (2015)

With fierce competition among used full-size pickups, the Ram 1500 remains a favorite and one of the best finds on the used market. Three body styles are available: regular cab, quad-cab, and crew cab, and were built with three bed lengths and ten trim levels.

Choice of powertrains includes the 3.6-liter V6, turbocharged 3.0 diesel V6, and 5.7-liter V8. Expect to pay more for trucks built with the optional V6 diesel.

The 2014 Ram 1500 model was awarded MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year. 

Ford F-150 (2015-2016)

The release of the 2015 Ford F-150 marked the 13th generation of one of the company’s all-time bestsellers.

New designs included a changeover to aluminum sheet body for more agile handling and better economic performance. The redesigned interior adds a stylish look and feel that’s comparable to many high-end sedans. 

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2015)

Tough, rugged styling, consistent reliability, and high safety ratings keep the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranking near the top of best used pickups.

An affordable pickup with great towing performance, cargo space, and a quiet ride make this truck a long-time favorite of pickup fans.

Nissan Frontier (2014-2015)

Although compact in size, its strong V6 engine and excellent off-road handling ability are good incentives for buyers when choosing a used pickup.

The Frontier has the power to easily tow 4,000 pounds. Owner dissatisfaction centers mainly around below-average fuel economy and unremarkable interior styling.

Toyota Tacoma (2016-2017)

Considered one of the best in its class, the Toyota Tacoma earns high marks for both on and off-road driving. Its fuel-efficient V6 is fully capable of pulling heavy loads. Many owner reviews cite the cramped rear seats as a problem but are pleased overall with the well-appointed cabin.

GMC Sierra 1500 (2014-2015)

Powerful GMC engines, good towing capabilities, smooth ride, and upscale cabin are all distinctive characteristics of Sierra 1500.

A near twin of Silverado 1500, the Sierra was built to be the more luxurious of the two. While both pickups are good choices, used Silverados are available with a lower price tag.

Toyota Tundra (2014-2015)

With several consecutive Consumer Report recommendations, Tundra also rates high in owner satisfaction, with excellent reliability and safety ratings.

A full-size pickup, Tundra is available with three cab sizes and three bed lengths. While not as fuel-efficient as some of its full-size competitors, this pickup has great towing capability and off-road handling.

Chevrolet Colorado (2015-2016)

Chevrolet Colorado appeals to buyers who need cargo space and plenty of towing capability. Styling, performance, and fuel efficiency make it a standout against its nearest competitors, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. Prices will be higher for the 2016 models offered for the first time with turbo-diesel.

Honda Ridgeline (2014)

Maybe not as muscle-bound as serious pickup owners demand, the Honda Ridgeline is a nifty alternative for drivers that don’t need a full-size pickup.

Honda has combined all-wheel drive for good handling and a 5,000 pound towing capacity in a compact pickup, giving Ridgeline high performance, reliability, and good safety ratings.

Nissan Titan (2014-2015)

Lacking much of the advanced technology found in pickups of its class, the Nissan Titan is still a powerful performer. Built to compete with Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, the Titan is capable of delivering the horsepower and towing that full-size buyers want. 

As with any vehicle, used pickup trucks can be subject to manufacturer recalls. It’s important to ensure that your dealer addresses these recalls and that all defects have been corrected.
