Since the 1970s and 1980s, Japanese manufacturers have found success in the American automotive market. While at first these vehicles are lauded for affordability, efficiency, and perceived reliability, in today’s market, brands like Honda and Toyota are still the manufacturer of choice for American drivers. But which Japanese auto brand is the top-selling company in the U.S.? The answer likely won’t be a surprise.

Which Japanese car brand sells the best in the United States?

As of 2021, Toyota has taken the crown as the top Japanese auto manufacturer in the U.S. Not only that, but it surpassed General Motors in 2021 as well. According to reporting, Toyota registered 2.33 million vehicle sales. While GM sold 2.21 million units. This is the first time that GM has been beaten in sales since 1931, per CNBC.

In a call with reporters, Jack Hollis, Toyota North America’s senior vice president played down the victory, according to CNBC. Saying “that is not our goal, nor do we see it as sustainable.” GM became the top-selling auto brand once it passed Ford in the early 1930s.

What SUVs does Toyota sell in the U.S. market?

Toyota sells a variety of SUVs in the states. These range from off-road-focused models to vehicles that are more at home on a daily commute. Models like the Toyota 4Runner and Toyota RAV4 have been popular on American roads for some time.

Other models like the Toyota Highlander and Toyota Venza have also found success. Toyota SUVs often offer modern safety features as well as sharp design. Which is likely what helped lead to these vehicles’ popularity.

What trucks does Toyota sell?

Toyota sells two trucks in the United States. Despite being from a foreign brand, some Toyota trucks have been recognized as being more American than their domestic counterparts. The Toyota Tundra comes with a standard V6 engine which makes up to 389 horsepower and 479 pound-foot of torque.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Tacoma boasts a status as one of the few mid-size trucks that still offers a manual transmission. It also has a serious following in the off-road community. This is thanks to trim levels like the TRD Pro model.

Will Toyota continue to be the top Japanese manufacturer?

Predicting the future of the automotive industry is a difficult task. But it is hard to picture a market where Toyota does not continue being a popular car maker. Its lineup of car, truck, and SUV models is expansive. And these vehicles continue to embrace the future. Boasting available hybrid powertrains and a commitment to modern safety.

It doesn’t hurt that models like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota 4Runner hold value well in the second-hand market. Even if one of these used SUVs has high mileage. In the 1990s, Toyota expanded into the luxury market with its Lexus brand. Which is another sign of success for an automotive brand. Fellow company Honda also did the same with Acura. Which means whether a shopper is looking for a basic vehicle or something more premium, they can find it within the Japanese network of manufacturers.
