GM is developing a fix at its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon Wentzville, Missouri, manufacturing plant after 2023 truck owners reported dents in roofs. And surprisingly, it is not from structural issues. Instead, it’s due to touchless car wash water pressure.

The appeal of touchless car wash systems is that they don’t use brushes that scratch and sometimes damage paint surfaces. It is all done through water nozzles that increase water pressure, in conjunction with detergents, to remove dirt and grime. Manufacturers tout that these systems use much less water and are faster than traditional car washes.

This past summer, reports of dents appearing in the roof panels of Canyons and Colorados came to GM’s attention. It immediately began to find a solution to the issue for Wentzville, according to GM Authority. The automaker is not saying how it is implementing the correction, but it is aware of this happening on the 2023 midsize trucks.

The 2023 Colorado and Canyon trucks are all-new for 2023. So this is not happening to earlier versions of these midsizers.

What about the 2023 Colorado and Canyon trucks already purchased?

GM is not saying when the fix was incorporated into the assembly line or if it has even happened yet. We assume precast foam will go under the top to take care of the issue. Whatever it is that GM is implementing at the assembly lines, a bigger question is what it is going to do about the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks in private hands.

Dentless body repair can take care of existing damage but won’t stop it from happening again. The trucks’ tops have both inner and outer skin. For those trucks on the road, we doubt GM will cut the inner skin for whatever support it deems necessary.

How will GM fix trucks already on the road?

Another approach might be to shoot foam into the cavity through a small hole in the inner skin. Then a plug will seal off the hole, much in the way Ziebart-like undercarriage spray protectants for salt and rust. Of course, we don’t know if it’s possible that the foam could expand and create further irregularities to the tops. What we do know is that all of this is pure speculation, however, as we have no way of knowing what fix GM has in store.

We should also add that for those 2023 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon owners who frequent car washes, stay away from the touchless variety. Or, wash your truck yourself.
