Both Ford and Volkswagen have been working together on a number of models for the past couple of years. Now, the first fruit of that joint partnership has wrought the seven-seat Tourneo Connect. Available in two wheelbases, it is also almost identical to the VW Caddy. 

The Tourneo is the product of Ford and Volkswagen

This is only one of a number of commercial vehicles the two will develop together. They’re also working on autonomous driving systems, and a Ford vehicle based on VW’s MEB EV platform. Another vehicle with the combined efforts of the two will be the VW Amarok and Ford Ranger. 

Ford calls the Tourneo Connect a “multi-activity vehicle that brings a new level of style, space, and versatility to the Tourneo brand. We’ve taken the qualities that customers value and have raised them to another level, creating the new Tourneo Connect that’s ready for any challenge-whether it’s work or play.” 

The Tourneo comes in both short- and long-wheelbase versions

With the short wheelbase Tourneo, there are 92 cubic feet of cargo capacity. With the long-wheelbase version, there are 110 cubic feet. That is with the rear and second seats folded down. If you need more space, the front passenger seat also folds down. That gives almost 10 feet for things like surfboards or kayaks. 

There will be three engine options; a 1.5-liter EcoBoost pumping out 112 hp, and two EcoBlue diesel engines. One has 110 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. The higher-rated version provides 120 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. 

Three engines and three trims are available

There are also three trims available. The base Trend version comes with a high-gloss black grille surround and an 8.25-inch infotainment screen. With the middle Sport trim, you also get hood stripes, a unique lower bumper, a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The top Titanium trim adds privacy glass, satin chrome accents, and 16-inch alloy wheels. 

While it seems like another in a long line of medium SUVs in the US, it won’t be sold here. It will be on sale in the first part of 2022 in Europe. Deliveries will begin in the spring.

With VW planning on importing the Caddy early next year, it makes sense that the Tourneo won’t be sold here. They are too similar to warrant stepping on each other. The same will be true for the Ranger and Amarok, except this time it is the Amarok that won’t be in the US. That’s parity in a joint relationship.
