Towing With a Luxury SUV? Oh Yeah, These 8 Can Tow More Than 5,000 Pounds in Comfort
Every now and then we need to get the boat to the marina or the horses to the stables. And, we get it, not everybody wants to drive an old pickup truck just because it can tow a healthy amount. Fortunately, today’s luxury SUVs can take the place and these eight from Jeep, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Land Rover, and GMC can all tow more than 5,000 pounds. That should be enough for a ski boat, or a pontoon, and trailer.
The Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are luxury SUVs with a humble nameplate
Don’t let anyone tell you that the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer aren’t luxury SUVs. They can bring it. Jeep has gone miles to update its interiors, well, in the top trims, and the Grand Wagoneer in Series III trim is especially nice as its larger Grand Wagoneer sibling. It starts at $88,640 but has an interior that would shame a Land Rover. You can add multiple screens for the passengers, leather, an uber-premium Mcintosh stereo and more.
The Wagoneer can tow up to 7,400 pounds and bring you and seven of your friends along for the ride. The Grand Wagoneer in Series II trim can run as much as $108,000, and it can tow 8,260 pounds. The Audi Q7 can tow more than 7,000 pounds
Towing with an Audi? You bet. Anyone who has driven a turbocharged 3.0-liter Q7 in 55 Premium trim knows it’s a quick SUV, and that extra power lends itself to a 7,700-pound maximum towing capacity.
The Q7 was updated in 2020 with cool LED lights and a squared off look, as well as a ton of tech that helps you stay safe (and alert) on the road. The three-row Audi Q7 comes with a long, long, list of standard features for $63,800. It’s very similar to the best-selling smaller Q5, but it has a third row.
BMW X5 and X6 are unlikely towing companions
The BMW X5 was last all-new in 2021 and can now tow up to 7,200 pounds in xDrive45e trim. Since BMWs naming isn’t conventional, the “e” means that it’s electrified, in this case with BMW’s plug-in system, and the “x” means all-wheel drive, and together it all makes 389 horsepower. The BMW has all the luxury you’d expect for $65,700.
Fun Fact: BMW’s X6, which is the swoopier coupe version of the X5, can also tow up to 7,200 pounds.
Towing with a Porsche? Makes sense for a race car!
You don’t see many horse trailers behind Porsche Cayennes, but perhaps you should. Any model, from the base Cayenne to the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid can tow up to 7,716 pounds. With engines that range from 225 horsepower to 541 horsepower, you know you’ll be able to get wherever you’re going in time (and in style) in a Cayenne. They don’t come cheap, though, and the models that can tow go from $72,000 to $171,300, without options.
The all-new Land Rover Range Rover brings presence
If your towing needs also require you to keep the back seat passengers extra comfy, take a look at the new Range Rover that can tow 7716 pounds. Sure, it ain’t cheap, at $104,500, but nothing makes a statement like a Range Rover. For 2023 the Range Rover was completely redesigned, so you get the latest in tech and luxury, and that includes reclining middle (!) seats with their own suite of infotainment.
The new Range Rover has seating for seven, a sophisticated four-wheel drive system that you can add for a price, and a presence that could be priceless. However, according to Auto News Europe, the company has had some production issues with its new uber-SUB.
The GMC Yukon comes with truck bones
Go old-school with the GMC Yukon Denali. In Denali trim the workhorse SUV Yukon can nearly rival the Range Rover or the Grand Wagoneer, and in some cases beat it. The Denali trim adds what seems like dozens of cows of leather and acres of wood. But, under the hood you can order GM’s might 6.2-liter 420-horsepower V8, and then back it up with the Sierra truck’s four-wheel drive system. It starts at $70,600 and because of it’s body-on-frame design, it can tow a monstrous 8,200 pounds (though the Grand Wagoneer tops it). With that kind of towing ability, you could tow not just a fishing boat, but a big-engine speed boat.
