Reliability can mean different things to different people, but I think the easiest, or at least most practical, way to think about it is how long a car or truck will last. A new study shows the cars and trucks that are most likely to accrue the most miles. One more surprising discovery is that the venerable Toyota 4Runner is projected to fail before a surprising Chevy pickup truck, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD.
Is the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD a reliable pickup truck?
According to the new iSeeCars list of the longest-lasting vehicles, the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is one of the most reliable pickup trucks on the market. As of 2020, the Silverado 2500 got a whole new design. Regardless of its divisive appearance, this monster truck came to show us how easy living with an HD truck can be, not to look pretty.
The surprising part isn’t that Chevrolet makes a good truck; it’s that the Silverado 2500 is more likely to run longer than the Toyota 4Runner.
Is the Toyota 4Runner reliable?
The Toyota 4Runner is one of the most famously reliable SUVs ever made. For decades 4×4 enthusiasts have preferred the 4Runner for its tough dependability. Has something changed? As a matter of fact, nothing changed for the 4Runner in a very long time. This is both the model’s superpower and its biggest weakness. While the 4Runner is built around a killer platform, it is woefully outdated. New technology might make loyalists scared, but new tech can also greatly improve a model.
We have been in the fifth generation of the 4Runner since 2009. It is fair to say Toyota’s most-beloved SUV might be a bit overdue for a new generation.
The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is more reliable than the Toyota 4Runner
Understanding that, it’s not that the 4Runner has changed; it’s more that the Silverado has. To be clear, the scoring for this list is based on the percentage chance that any particular unit will make it to 250,000 miles. The old 4Runner still shows that 41.0% of 4Runners still make it over 250,000 miles. The surprising part is that 41.2% of Chevy Silverado 2500s make the 250,000 miles mark. It’s a close game, but the Chevy takes the V.
This might be a tough pill to swallow for the ‘yoda die-hards out there, and hey, I get it. Toyota has built its name on toughness and reliability. It’s unsettling to see a giant American truck beat it out.
Don’t count the Toyota out for the long run tho. There’s a decent chance the next-gen 4Runner can bring the percentage if it gets the same treatment the new Sequoia, Tacoma, and Tundra got.
