Production is now resuming for the 2023 Toyota bZ4X after a complication over the wheels falling off has been corrected. New bZ4X models should be arriving at dealerships any day now, allowing customers to drive off with the first electric Toyota SUV.

There was a recall for the bZ4X due to separating wheels. According to Motor Trend, wheels were falling off of the SUVs in Japan. This led to a stop-sale in the United States until a global remedy could be found.

The main issue was related to a lack of clamping force between the lug nuts, wheel hub, and wheel. The lug nuts and wheel seats had too much friction to allow for proper clamping force. As a result, they left enough space for the wheel to move around.

Certain driving scenarios, such as hard breaking, caused the components to heat up and extend, allowing them to loosen even faster.

Now the new lug nuts have a conical seat that no longer directly attaches to the wheel hub. They have a washer shape to reduce friction between the wheel bolt and seat to reduce friction.

They also have more alloy to increase the coefficient of friction during cycling to resist any movement from the bolts as they expand and contract. Plus, the American models got new wheels to match the specifications of the hub, so the lug holes are perfectly aligned.

How much is the 2023 bZ4X

You can get started in the 2023 Toyota bZ4X for about $42,000. The top-spec bZ4X Limited increases the price to around $46,700.

This vehicle might not be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit as Toyota may have met its limit due to selling popular hybrid models such as the Toyota RAV4 Prime.

Each model is available with a single motor and front-wheel drive or with a dual-motor setup and all-wheel drive. Upgrading to the dual-motor option cost about $2,080.

With the single motor, you get 201 hp and an EPA-estimated range of up to 252 miles. With the dual-motor setup, the bZ4X cranks out 215 hp and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.4 seconds.

This is peppy, but not exactly exhilarating. Also, rivals like the Volkswagen I.D4 crank out 295 hp, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 delivers 320 hp.

Does the bZ4X have nice features?
