Camry sales dropped 21% but still holding strong

Car and Driver reports that sales of the Camry have dropped 21%, but even that massive dip saw the Camry substantially above the next-best-selling car: the Corolla.

According to HotCars, Toyota sold 313,795 Camry sedans in 2021—a 7% increase over the last year. With numbers like that, it’s not hard to see why the Camry is seeing a dip now. Most new cars are more expensive than usual, which can spook budget buyers who would usually be delighted to buy a Camry. 

That, combined with supply shortages and trouble accessing inventory, can take a big bite out of sales.

The 2022 Camry outsold the Corolla by over 14K cars

Who doesn’t love a little sibling rivalry? The Toyota Corolla was the second-best-selling car, moving 47,501 units for the first quarter of 2022. That’s just over 75% of the Toyota Camry’s total sales.

One of the reasons for the sales difference may be size—Americans generally prefer bigger cars, and the midsize Camry offers more passenger and cargo room than the compact Corolla.

The Camry outsold the 2022 Honda Accord by nearly 20K cars

The rivalry between the Honda Accord vs. Toyota Camry is still alive and well. Critics overall may prefer the Accord, but the public is voting with their wallets—and the Camry comes out on top. The Honda Accord sold 42,039 units for the first quarter of 2022.  That’s only 68% of the Toyota Camry’s total sales.

Honda has been struggling with supply issues for months now, and it’s not just the Accord that’s taken a hit in sales. The Civic has also seen a massive sales dip within the past year.
