Year in and year out, the Toyota Camry ranks as one of the most popular midsize sedans. Most automotive publications also rate it among the top sedans. However, that has changed. Edmunds recently ranked the best midsize sedans, and the Camry came in sixth. Reviewers say that “the main chink in its armor is a lackluster four-cylinder engine and slightly noisy cabin.” It doesn’t help that the current-generation Camry dates back to the 2018 model year, and the five higher-ranked cars are newer or provide better performance. 

Here are the top five midsize sedans that outrank the Toyota Camry in Edmunds’ roundup.

5. Volkswagen Arteon (Edmunds score: 7.8 out of 10)

Edmunds calls the Volkswagen Arteon “one of the best cars you’re not buying.” It features sleek, distinctive styling, a comfortable, well-laid-out interior, and plenty of cargo room. Performance suits the class, with a refined ride and well-balanced handling. As a midsize car, the Arteon is equal parts sports sedan and family hauler, making it a compelling option for people who want practicality in a stylish, fun-to-drive package.   

4. Hyundai Sonata (Edmunds score: 8.0)

For years, Hyundai chased the Toyota Camry as its benchmark for the Sonata. That changed recently when the South Korean automaker revamped its midsize car, cranking up the styling and performance. The Hyundai Sonata has always been big on value, offering more features for less money than its midsize rivals, and that hasn’t changed. However, it now stands on its own merit and ranks higher than the Camry as a more well-rounded package.  

3. Kia Stinger (Edmunds score: 8.2)

As a performance sedan, the Kia Stinger can walk the walk with its optional 368-hp turbocharged V6 and excellent handling. But even the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder packs an impressive 300-hp punch. Edmunds calls it “a beguiling blend of speed, comfort, style, and utility, and it skirts the line between performance and luxury.” It’s more expensive than the other cars on this list, but you get what you pay for. It’s more of a bargain Audi A7 than a Camry competitor. 

2. Honda Accord (Edmunds score: 8.3)

No matter what you prioritize in a midsize sedan, the Honda Accord should be near the top of your list. This perennial frontrunner does everything well. It provides refined comfort and plenty of room for people and cargo. Plus, Honda packed it with features like the latest technology and advanced driver/safety aids. Additionally, fuel economy is fine for this class, with a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder engines and a hybrid powertrain. And when the pavement gets twisty or bumpy, the Accord won’t embarrass itself, thanks to precise handling and refined road manners.  

1. Kia K5 (Edmunds score: 8.3)

The Kia K5 is Edmunds’ top-rated midsize sedan, and reviewers aren’t shy about singing its praises. Like its Hyundai Sonata cousin, the K5 abounds with value at a price that makes you think you’re getting away with something. Also, like the Sonata, it boasts sharp styling, a comfortable, quiet interior, and a generous warranty. The K5 beats the competition because it’s a total package. Its style, performance, comfort, and features are a bit better than rivals — at a lower price. 

What are the best midsize cars to buy? 

Only one-tenth of a point separated the Toyota Camry from the Volkswagen Arteon. That’s barely worth mentioning, and it’s no reason to cross the Camry off your list. It’s a great car, but the top five are slightly better.      

If you’re looking for a performance sedan that doubles as a practical hauler, the Kia Stinger is the best choice, with the K5 and Hyundai Sonata rounding out the top three. The Camry, Accord, and Arteon are also-rans as performance cars, lacking the sharp performance of the top models. 

On the other hand, if value and practicality are your top priorities, the K5, Accord, and Sonata are your best options. All three sedans are the most well-rounded and offer the best value.
