The modern car market looks quite different from the markets of a decade prior. For instance, Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) make up two of the top 12 best-selling vehicles in America. However, some things carry over from yesteryear, like the popularity of the Toyota Camry. In fact, the Camry outsold its closest passenger car competitors by a wide margin.

Surprise! The Toyota Camry took the top spot among all passenger car sales in the United States last year. Of course, if you’ve been tracking the best-selling cars year-over-year, you know the Camry’s bragging right isn’t much of a surprise at all.

In fact, Car and Driver jested that they “think hell will freeze over before the Toyota Camry relinquishes its spot as the bestselling non-SUV in the country.” Sure, the Camry, and just about every gas-powered sedan, are yielding sales to crossovers and SUVs. However, that didn’t stop Toyota from selling a whopping 290,649 of its mid-size sedan.

Toyota Camry290,649
Tesla Model 3232,700
Toyota Corolla232,370
Honda Civic200,381
Honda Accord197,947

What’s more, that magical number puts the Toyota Camry the better part of 100,000 units ahead of its perennial midsize sedan segment rival, the Honda Accord. Interestingly enough, the compact Honda Civic outsold the Accord by nearly 2,500 units.

Conversely, the Toyota Camry outsold its compact sibling, the Corolla, by 58,279 units. That said, popular EVs like the Tesla Model 3 also have top spots among the best-selling vehicles from 2023. Frankly, the entry-level Tesla passenger car outsold the more affordable Corolla by just 330 units.

Still, as crossovers, SUVs, and alternative energy vehicles continue to gain popularity, we can expect the Camry to hand over some of its market share. For instance, the Tesla Model Y, the brand’s entry-level electric SUV, managed to outsell the Camry by a staggering 95,251 units in 2023.
