Recently, Car and Driver released its list of the top 25 best-selling cars, SUVs, and trucks of 2021 for the first quarter after automakers revealed their quarterly reports. Toyota has six vehicles on the list, with four landing in the top 10. The coronavirus pandemic made 2020 a strange year for car sales and promises to make 2021 almost as strange.

But some things are indisputable. With six vehicles among the top 25 best-sellers, Toyota is certainly doing something right. Which of its vehicles made the list? 

Toyota has six of the best-selling vehicles in 2020

The Car and Driver list features the 25 top-selling vehicles on the market for the first quarter of 2021. Toyota has six vehicles on the list: the Toyota 4Runner, Highlander, Tacoma, Corolla, Camry, and the RAV4. The Toyota Tacoma, Corolla, Camry, and RAV4 were all in the top 10 with the RAV4 cracking the top five in fourth place.

Toyota’s representation is well-balanced on the list. There are three SUVs, including one in the top five, two sedans, and the Tacoma which is one of America’s favorite pickup trucks.

How did Toyota do in Q1 2021 sales?

Toyota sold 37,263 units of its 4Runner SUV in the first quarter of 2021. It’s a favorite among off-roading fans and has the sales to prove it. The Japanese automaker saw a 36 percent increase in sales over the first quarter of 2020.

There were 63,831 units sold of the 2021 Toyota Highlander in the first quarter. A bigger three-row SUV, the Highlander is off to a strong start in 2021. Its sales are up 37 percent over what they were in the first quarter of 2020.

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma had 66,449 units sold in the first quarter of this year. The popularity of midsize trucks isn’t the only reason, though. The popular Tacoma saw a 27 percent sales increase over the same period of time last year.

There were 75,520 units sold of the 2021 Toyota Corolla in the first quarter of 2021. Both the hatchback and sedan versions of the Corolla benefit from a reputation of reliability that’s hard to match. Sales were up 8 percent over this time last year, and it finished well above its rival the Honda Civic.

Sales of the 2021 Toyota Camry were solid with 78,151 units sold in the first quarter. It’s a solid leader in the midsize sedan segment. Its sales jumped 4 percent over this time last year, and it was the top sedan on the list.

In fourth place overall on the list is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 with 114,255 units sold in 2021’s first quarter. That it’s the top-selling SUV so far this year really isn’t a surprise. Its lead on its rivals just continues to grow with sales that were up 20 percent from the first quarter of 2020.

A tale of six popular vehicles

The 2021 4Runner is an off-roading beast with lots of room for cargo and lots of great standard features. The interior may leave something to be desired. It’s not as good on the pavement as it is off. It’s still a capable SUV for daily driving and weekend adventures.

If you want a bigger three-row SUV that has a lot of standard features and an available hybrid powertrain, take a look at the 2021 Highlander. The back seat is a little cramped unless you’re putting the kids in the back and the cabin design is a little fussy for some. But it’s a great value and offers a reliable driving experience.

When it comes to midsize pickup trucks, the 2021 Tacoma is hard to beat. If you can look past the clumsy automatic transmission, underwhelming cabin, and small rear crew cab seat, it’s a solid reliable truck. It’s loaded with great driver-assist features and turns in a fantastic off-road performance.

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is an impressive car that has a lot to offer. If a little engine noise isn’t an issue, you’ve got a good-looking, well-equipped car with lots of great standard features. The hatchback version cuts down on passenger space in the rear and the cargo hold, but that’s the only real drawback.

The 2021 Camry is the best-selling sedan of 2021 so far for a reason. It gets great gas mileage, has lots of great standard assists, and the popular TRD model. While not everyone is crazy about its interior design, its lineup just keeps getting better and safer.

The top-selling SUV so far, the 2021 RAV4 has a sharp truck-like appearance, it’s a solid performer on the road, and it has a lot of good driver-assist features standard. The base level is pretty bare-bones, but the higher trims are definitely worth the investment. For a compact SUV, the RAV4 has a lot of interior space, even more variety, and a good work ethic.
