Feast your eyes on the Toyota Hilux Revo GR Sport Lo-Floor truck. It could be a preview of what to expect with the Toyota Tacoma. Perhaps if the racing Toyota Hilux does well, we will get a version of it in the United States.

Alright, so the Toyota Hilux Revo GR Sport Lo-Floor truck is a mouthful. It could floor it off into the distance before we even finish saying its name. Also, turning the Hilux into a racer seems like the opposite of its purpose.

For a bit of background information, the Hilux is like the Toyota Tacoma’s cousin. The Hilux was the truck we had before the Tacoma. However, it was discontinued here in America due to rising emission standards.

Toyota decided that it would be easier to release a brand new truck instead of redesigning the Hilux to be more efficient. So, other countries get the midsized off-roading Hilux, while we get the legendary Tacoma.

Sometimes updates to vehicles are experimented with in other markets before the changes are made to American models. If the street racing Hilux gains popularity, we might see the Tacoma follow in its tracks.

How does the Hilux Rever GR Sport perform?

The Toyota Thai division is launching the Toyota Hilux Revo GR Sport in an attempt to drum up interest in the street truck racing trend. Remember racers like the Ford Lighting and Chevy S10?

So far, the Revo Sport GR Lo-Floor has 17-inch wheels wrapped in tiny tires. The ride height was lowered by about an inch to provide a more stable ride, primarily at higher speeds. It should also improve comfort for passengers.

A 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine with 201 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque powers this racing truck. Power is sent to the rear axle via a six-speed automatic transmission. Strangely, it doesn’t have a manual option.

The Hilux Revo Hi-Floor has 18-inch alloy wheels and beefier tires. It also has monotube shock absorbers and a few suspension modifications. It won the Dakar Rally in 2019. We don’t have the updated specifications for the new model.

What’s new for the Tacoma?

We might not see the Toyota Hilux Revo GR Sport’s racing upgrades on the 2022 Toyota Tacoma yet. But when the Tacoma is redesigned for 2024, we could see a few enhancements for street racing.

For 2022, the Trail Edition and TRD Pro both sit half an inch taller in the rear and 1.1 and 1.5 inches taller in the front. This improves approach, break-over, and departure angles. Plus, the Tacoma TRD Pro has a new shade of Electric Lime paint.

The Trail Edition includes 16-inch bronze rims and bronze lettering on the grille. The TRD Pro also has new logos on the rear and new hood graphics. Pricing for the 2021 model starts at about $26,400. It may receive a slight increase for 2022.

While the Toyota Hilux gets wild in Thailand, the Tacoma is primarily a carryover model. But we will keep you updated as we learn more. Perhaps a hybrid model isn’t too far off in the future.
