Toyota Issues ‘Do Not Drive’ Advisory for 50,000 Cars With Deadly Airbags
If you or anyone you know is driving a 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla or Matrix, or a 2004-2005 RAV4, Toyota’s latest “do not drive” advisory may affect you.
This is the latest in a series of recalls to replace malfunctioning airbag inflators that have killed 26 drivers in the U.S. The airbag inflators are built by an automotive supplier called “Takata.” Since 2009, the Takata recall has impacted 67 million units from 20 automakers. It’s almost shocking that the above models years of the Corolla, Matrix, and RAV4 have yet to be recalled over airbag inflators.
An airbag inflator is very similar to a shotgun shell. The car’s safety system “fires” it and the expanding gases from the explosion inflate the airbag. Unlike ammunition, airbag inflators do not have a projectile. But some inflators built by Takata are coming apart and “firing” shrapnel at the driver.
Neither Toyota or the NHTSA have confirmed whether this latest round of recalls are linked to a new death. But Toyota is recommending owners of these model year Corollas, Matrixes, and RAV4s stop driving their vehicles immediately.
If you are worried about your car, you can call your local dealership, share your VIN, and see if it is subject to any open recalls. You can also call the NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline for the same information: 888-327-4236.
