At long last, Toyota has revealed all the details of the first fully redesigned Tacoma in two decades. Now that the 2024 Tacoma is out, we may have some hints as to what a redesigned 2024 Toyota 4Runner could look like.  

Will there be a new redesigned 4Runner in 2024?

 It’s possible that we could see the arrival of a redesigned Toyota 4Runner in 2024. However, no specific timeline is set, and the reveal could come as late as 2025. 

Toyota doesn’t have to rush a 4Runner redesign, either. The current model is as popular as ever, selling around 200,000 units annually. 

Still, the fact that Toyota has fully redesigned the Tundra, Sequoia, and Tacoma hints strongly that the 4Runner is next on the agenda. 

What could we see in the redesigned Toyota 4Runner?

Some common threads exist between the new 2024 Tacoma and the recently redesigned Toyota Sequoia and Tundra. If we pull on those threads, we can understand what the next-generation 4Runner may look like. 

Updated platform 

It’s safe to assume that the redesigned 4Runner will switch to Toyota’s new TNGA-F platform. Now used by the 2024 Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia, Toyota says it developed the truck architecture specifically for the North American market.  

That’s a big deal for the 4Runner. Toyota’s 4×4 SUV has had the same basic platform since the late 2000s without updates. A new platform will fundamentally change its performance and handling dynamics. 

Hybrid, turbocharged engine options 

It’s highly likely that the redesigned 4Runner will have a turbocharged hybrid engine. Toyota’s redesigned trucks have all been strapped with versions of the i-Force MAX powertrain, maximizing power and efficiency. We expect the 2024 4Runner to get the same version as the 2024 Tacoma, which makes 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. 

This would be a significant step up from the 4Runner’s current powertrain, the old 4.0-liter V6. While the V6 is sturdy and reliable, it’s low on power and poor on fuel efficiency. A modernized powertrain would be a welcome improvement for the redesigned 4Runner. 

Styling updates 

The most apparent change for the redesigned 4Runner will likely be its looks. The SUV has always stayed close to the appearance of its sister vehicle, the Tacoma. Now that we have a look at the redesigned 2024 Tacoma’s appearance, we have an idea of the elements that may find their way into the 4Runner. 

Toyota has adopted a fairly consistent headlight, front fascia, and taillight design language across its truck-based models. A new 4Runner would likely inherit those same cues. 

Is the current Toyota 4Runner too old?

The current 4Runner is ancient by modern SUV standards. Its outdated powertrain, aging looks, and unrefined driving dynamics are starting to really show the SUV’s age. 

Sure – the 4Runner is still popular. But father time remains undefeated, and he will eventually come for the 4Runner. 

Toyota can probably get away with keeping the current 4Runner for a couple more model years. However, it will eventually have to release a redesign to keep drivers interested.
