The Toyota Tacoma Barely Beats the Jeep Wrangler in 1 Area
If you buy a Jeep or Toyota, you can relax with their reputation for solid resale values. While comparing trucks to SUVs can be tricky, the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota Tacoma stack up incredibly close in one important area.
Does the Jeep Wrangler or Toyota Tacoma have a better resale value?
The Toyota Tacoma barely has a better resale value than the Jeep Wrangler. However, according to iSeeCars, they’re both included in the top five vehicles with the best depreciation rate.
This means that they hold more value than tons of rivals like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Sequoia, Subaru Crosstrek, and more.
After five years of ownership, the average Tacoma model depreciates by roughly 24.4% with an average $8,359 MSRP rate.
The Jeep Wrangler faces a 24.8% depreciation rate with an average $8,951 MSRP difference. So, the Tacoma has about $592 in savings compared to the Wrangler after five years.
But the 2024 Wrangler has an MSRP of $31,995 and the 2024 Tacoma starts at $31,500. That’s only a $495 MSRP difference.
The Wrangler may have more value due to providing standard 4×4 and the base engine features 285 hp. The standard engine with the 2024 Tacoma provides 228 hp. The Wrangler 4xe has 375 hp and the Tacoma Hybrid cranks out 326 hp.
Both options have a manual transmission available for certain trim levels. But the Wrangler has a removable top and doors.
While the Tacoma benefits from the utility of a truck bed, the Wrangler offers more passenger space for families.
When properly equipped, the Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,709 lbs. The Wrangler can tow up to 5,000 bs and carry a payload of up to 1,400 lbs.
The Wrangler has a reliability score of 84 out of 100 from J.D.Power, and the Tacoma earned an 83. They both have above-average reliability scores.
Even if the Tacoma has a slightly better depreciation rate, the Wrangler impresses with more value in terms of space, power, and standard 4×4. But the Tacoma is better for towing. Things may change as the 2024 Tacoma changes the scene with its complete redesign.
