When it comes to a popular truck like the Toyota Tacoma, any sign of a new variant is sure to get folks paying attention. The current Tacoma has been around for years, and a redesigned Tacoma has been rumored for some time. And now, it looks like Toyota is starting to tease what the next-gen Tacoma midsize truck will look like.

Will there be a redesigned Toyota Tacoma?

Although we do not have any firm details, a redesigned Toyota Tacoma is coming. Recently over on Instagram, the brand posted a vague picture. And as we automotive enthusiasts do, it was almost immediately identified as the fourth-generation Tacoma truck.

The current-gen has been out since the 2015 model year, and its underpinnings are much older than that. So it is certainly time for Toyota to redesign its midsize truck. The brand has already brought the new generation of Tundra, and the next Tacoma will likely follow a lot of that vehicle’s design language.

While we don’t have confirmed specifics from Toyota, the redesigned Tacoma will probably ride on the TNGA-F platform. That is Toyota’s new global architecture that is used by body-on-frame vehicles.

I say that Toyota might be teasing the new Tacoma because the picture posted doesn’t specifically call out the redesigned truck. According to Kelley Blue Book, it could also be a Toyota Tundra shot from a low angle. Still, if you’re a Taco fan like me, speculating is all a part of the fun.

Will the be a Tacoma hybrid?

Perhaps where a lot of the mystery hides about the redesigned Tacoma is what its powertrains will be. We can kind of assume that a new version of this midsize truck will follow Toyota’s current design language. But, the brand has a host of engine options it could put under the hood.

The new Tundra is a truck that offers a hybrid engine. And it doesn’t seem like there’s any reason for Toyota not to give its smaller sibling the same treatment. It would not be surprising to see the 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine put in a new Tacoma. It makes 239 horsepower, which is significantly more power than the current four-cylinder does.

Personally, I would be excited to see a detuned version of the 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 in the new Tacoma. I’ve tested that engine in the 2022 Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX600 Ultra Luxury, and it is honestly very impressive. But Toyota might keep that engine reserved for its more expensive products to incentivize potential buyers to make the step up.

A new midsize Toyota Truck is coming

OK, so I know all we have right now is this vague Instagram post. But in the near future, it is likely that Toyota will start slowly revealing the new Tacoma.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma could be the last version of this midsize truck before a redesign.

As this segment heats up in terms of competition, the brand will need to do something to keep up with the Taco’s rivals. For now, Toyota is keeping its cards to its chest in regard to its small truck.
