Car safety is one of the most important things to look for when shopping for a new car. There are many ways to measure it, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, gives the safest cars a Top Safety Pick+ rating. Three Toyotas were awarded that rating in 2019, and here’s a brief overview of each one.

The Toyota Avalon tries to stand out in a rough sedan market

The 2019 Avalon was given the highest safety award by the IIHS because it scored the highest marks in practically every category that was tested. The only category that received a poor rating was for the headlights on several trims of the Avalon.

The headlights on the XLE, Hybrid XLE, XSE, and Hybrid XSE were rated as poor by the IIHS. However, the headlights on the Limited, Touring, and Hybrid Limited trims of the Avalon were rated as good.

Overall, the Avalon is a solid sedan that’s generally unremarkable in terms of its overall performance. It’s decently priced as it’ll range between $30,000 to $50,000 depending on the trim. It’s quite fuel-efficient, especially if you choose a hybrid model. That being said, it’s also well-powered, as the TRD trim comes with a 3.5-liter V6 that generates about 300-hp.

Unfortunately, Americans aren’t really buying a lot of sedans and there’s speculation that Toyota won’t continue innovating on the Avalon if its sales numbers don’t improve. Regardless, the Avalon remains a generally great large sedan to buy.

The Camry remains a popular choice, for good reason

Like the Avalon, the Camry got the highest safety award because it got the best grade in pretty much every category. Unlike the Avalon though, the IIHS didn’t give a poor grade to anything that the 2019 Camry had to offer. That said, the headlights of the Camry still didn’t get the best grade possible.

Every trim of the Camry except for the Hybrid XLE trim that has the optional adaptive headlights package received an acceptable grade from the IIHS. Everything else was given the highest marks.

Like the Avalon, the Camry is an overall solid sedan. The main difference between the two is the size, as the Avalon is a full-size sedan whereas the Camry is a midsize sedan. Its smaller size also means a cheaper price tag, as the Camry can range from about $24,000 to $35,000 depending on the trim.

The Camry is also a pretty notorious sporty sedan, and it’s pretty fast given its size and price tag. However, the main issue with the Camry is that unless fuel efficiency is the only thing you care about, you can find a car with superior features elsewhere.

There are faster sedans out there, there are more practical cars out there, and there are cheaper cars out there too. But the Camry is one of the safest cars on the market.

The Toyota RAV4 is one of the most popular small SUVs

The last 2019 Toyota to get the IIHS’s highest award is the RAV4. Similar to the Camry and the Avalon, it gets the best grade in every area except for its headlights. Like the Camry, the Hybrid Limited trim that’s been equipped with the optional adaptive headlights package got the best grade.

The headlights on the LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, Limited, and Hybrid LE trims got the marginal grade, which is the second to worst grade possible. The headlights on the Hybrid XLE, Hybrid XSE, and Hybrid Limited trims got the worst grade possible. But again, everything else was given the best possible grade.

The RAV4 is the best-selling small SUV in the U.S., so there’s little to complain about. It boasts remarkable features in pretty much every category that’s considered when buying a car.

The only major complaint about the RAV4 is that it’s not as powerful as other SUVs. However, it’s not underpowered by any means either. Overall, it’s a very well-rounded SUV that is very affordable as it starts at about $25,000.
