The 2022 Toyota Tundra sent a shockwave through the automotive world when it was unveiled. The Tundra nameplate had become synonymous with complacency over its many years without changes. Thanks to a major redesign for the 2022 truck, the Toyota Tundra had the biggest comeback of the year.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is nothing like your old Tundra truck

The 2022 Toyota Tundra features a complete redesign from its previous model year. Its exterior is much more modern and sports a new front fascia and a new grill. The full-size pickup truck’s interior is much more refined than previous model years.

To understand just how far the Tundra has come over the years, one must understand its past. The Toyota Tundra has lived in the shadow of full-size trucks from automakers like Ford, Ram, and General Motors for years. It had plenty of power, but it was too uncomfortable and too unsophisticated to sit at the table with trucks like the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500.

According to Consumer Reports, the 2021 Toyota Tundra’s ride quality, braking, and fuel economy were subpar. Poor ride quality and fuel economy in today’s market can easily cause consumers to explore other options. The 2022 Toyota Tundra addresses most of consumers’ major gripes with the full-size pickup truck.

Despite the nameplate’s many shortcomings, the Tundra has gained a huge following over the years. Tundra fans have longed for a model that is more comfortable and more fuel-efficient. Toyota answered the prayers of its fans and hushed critics by addressing many of the pickup’s issues.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra achieves 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. While this fuel economy is still far from groundbreaking, it is a huge improvement. The 2021 Toyota Tundra only gets 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 miles per gallon on the highway. The new Tundra gets an average of six more combined miles per gallon. The nameplate’s fuel economy has advanced from horrible to competitive. Furthermore, the Tundra Hybrid will undoubtedly get even better fuel economy.

Gas mileage aside, the Tundra also includes more premium cabin materials and better tech. The 2022 Tundra features a new 8.0-inch infotainment system with a 14.0-inch optional upgrade.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra starts at $35,950. It is a major improvement over previous model years but the Tundra, unfortunately, isn’t the best full-size pickup in its class. The Tundra is still second to leaders in its segment like the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.

If you’re a fan of the Tundra there’s currently no better model than the 2022 model year. If you’re looking for the best full-size truck on the market, the new Tundra still isn’t the best option despite its many upgrades.
