The Toyota Tundra Is Stealing a Slice of the Pie
We have great news for the Toyota Tundra because it can’t stop and won’t stop blazing past rivals, including the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevy Silverado 1500. The 2022 Toyota Tundra shows that hard work pays off because it’s the only truck with increasing sales.
2022 Toyota Tundra sales are rapidly increasing
The 2022 Toyota Tundra has felt like an underdog since it debuted a few months ago. It’s only the third-generation Toyota Tundra and needed a lot of work to catch up to segment leaders like the incredibly popular Ford F-150.
According to Auto Week, sales have increased by 15 percent for the Tundra during the past eight months. The Tundra has moved about 64,702 units from January to August.
The plant in San Antonio, Texas, keeps pumping trucks out as production of the previous generation comes to a close.
Meanwhile, sales for the Ram 1500 have dropped by 18 percent, the Chevy Silverado 1500 fell by about 11 percent, the GMC Sierra is dealing with a 15 percent decrease, and sales for the Ford F-150 have dropped by 10 percent.
But the Tundra isn’t done. The Ford F-150 is still outselling it by six units to one. So, the Tundra is still working to close the gap, but it could catch up soon.
What’s so great about the new Tundra?
Sales of the 2022 Toyota Tundra are attributed to the i-Ford Max hybrid powertrain. Toyota predicted that the hybrid model would be responsible for 25 percent of sales, and it’s ringing in at 19 percent so far.
The hybrid powertrain consists of a 3.5-liter V6 engine, an electric motor, and a battery pack that combine to crank out 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. It helps the truck accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.2 seconds, which is excellent for the class.
The tundra Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 20 mg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway. Saving fuel is an attractive idea when today’s fuel prices come into play. It gets about eight more miles to the gallon than the outgoing model’s V8 engine.
In Tow Mode, the engine is always running, and in Sport Mode, when speeds are under 18 mph, the 10-speed transmission does most of the work.
In Normal or Eco Mode, the engine can turn off at speeds below 75 mph. Also, the gas-powered 3.5-liter V6 engine provides 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.
The Tundra got better for off-roading
The 2022 Toyota Tundra has a lot of improvements to consider. For example, the new multi-link rear suspension provides a smoother ride, enhances off-roading capabilities, and improves the towing capacity. It has a rear air suspension too.
Plus, the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro comes with skid plates, a two-speed transfer case with an automatic limited-slip differential, 2.5-inch Fox internal bypass shocks, an electronically locking rear differential, and 18-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in all-terrain Falken WILD PEAK tires.
More camera views assist with navigating around tight obstacles and hitching up your trailer. The Tundra is much improved for daily driving, towing, and off-roading. It’s no surprise that it’s taking a slice of the pie from other options.
