It can be frustrating when trucks burn more oil than they should. This is an issue that Toyota Tundra owners have struggled with. However, Toyota Tundra trucks might be losing oil due to an uncommon issue. 

Why could Toyota Tundra trucks be losing oil 

Toyota Tundra trucks might be burning oil or losing oil due to cam tower leaks. The cam tower is a part of the engine that holds the camshaft. It helps control when engine valves open and close. 

As the Tundra accrues miles, the cam towers can start to leak. But instead of the oil reaching the combustion tower and burning off, a cam tower leak can lead to oil seeping out of the engine. 

As a result, you lose more oil over time than you should. Signs of leaking cam towers include oil stains under your truck, visible oil around the cam towers, and oil pooling around the engine bay. 

Also,  with cam tower leaks you won’t notice blue smoke coming from the exhaust. This occurs when oil is being burned.

Toyota Tundra trucks with cam tower leaks can be a simple problem to repair. In some cases, you may only need to replace a gasket. However, ignoring the issue could lead to much bigger problems. 

Leaking cam towers typically only impact older Toyota Tundra models. It’s usually a high mileage issue that most drivers don’t have to worry about. 

Tundra models from before 2022, when the new generation launched. The previous generation is known for being incredibly reliable and durable. 

An average Tundra model from the previous generation can last over 300,000 miles. The key to longevity is regular care and maintenance. 

As your Tundra ages, keep an eye on the cam towers. Take your truck to a mechanic if you suspect that it’s leaking oil.
