Toyota’s 2 Mid-Trim Tundra Models Have Very Different Vibes
Toyota is offering its 2022 Tundra at an unprecedented seven trim levels. These range from the entry-level Tundra SR work truck to the all-new Tundra Capstone luxury truck. The 2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum and 1794 Edition are two mid-trim trucks that share a price point. But the Platinum and 1794 Edition have opposite vibes.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra lineup
The Toyota Tundra is all-new for 2022. Toyota is launching the Tundra’s third generation with seven trim levels.
The Tundra SR is a bare-bones four-door truck (starting at $35,950). The SR5 adds some creature comforts and performance ($40,755). The Tundra Limited features distinct visual upgrades and is available with the top-trim hybrid drivetrain ($46,850). Toyota’s Tundra Platinum ($56,990) and Tundra 1794 Edition ($57,690) both offer leather interiors and a ton of visual upgrades, but each with its own twist.
The final two Toyota Tundra trims are the off-road-ready TRD Pro, which is shaping up to be a cost-effective Ford Raptor. Recently, Toyota unveiled a true luxury truck: the Tundra Capstone.
2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum costs $56,990
While the 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited and 1794 Editions are decked out in bright chrome, the Platinum trim level has a more refined, futuristic style. Toyota has finished this truck’s unique 20-inch rims and trim in a dark gray color. This trim contrasts nicely with some of the Tundra’s brighter colors, such as “Blueprint” and “Supersonic Red.” With black and dark gray colors, the Platinum looks more rock and roll.
The 2022 Tundra Platinum also enjoys a 10-way power-adjustable front seat. It has lumbar support and a memory function with settings for each driver. The Platinum’s interior is black and trimmed with leather.
The Tundra Platinum has a host of standard features. This includes a segment-leading 14-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. This stereo system features 9 speakers.
The Tundra Platinum also comes fully loaded with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Finally, Toyota Safety Sense comes standard on the Tundra Platinum. This suite of driver aids includes blind-spot detection, emergency braking, steering assist, and dynamic cruise control.
2022 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition costs $57,690
Both the Tundra Platinum and 1794 Edition come with Toyota’s twin-turbocharged V6. This engine makes 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the 4WD Tundra has a tow rating of 11,000 pounds while its 2WD cousin can pull 12,000 pounds.
Toyota builds every Platinum and 1794 Edition with the Tundra’s larger four-door cab: the CrewMax. Buyers can choose between a 5.5-foot bed and a 6.5-foot bed. Later this year, Toyota will begin to offer both trucks with its i-FORCE MAX drivetrain which adds an electric motor to bump the total output to 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque.
The reason the Tundra 1794 costs a bit more than its Platinum cousin is that Toyota has finished its interior with full leather seats and American walnut wood trim. Buyers can opt for “Rich Cream” white leather or “Saddle Tan” brown leather. The 1794 Edition also offers a signature color: a “Smoked Mesquite” brown.
For the 1794 Edition trim, Toyota also decks the Tundra out with special chrome badges and unique 20-inch alloy rims. Finally, every 1794 Edition comes with Toyota’s trailer backup guide with Straight Path Assist (SPA) software.
One of the most unique things about the Tundra 1794 Edition is its name. Toyota builds every Tundra at its San Antonio plant. The factory is built on the grounds of an old ranch that was founded in 1794. You could say its become more of a horsepower ranch.
The Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition’s a little country, the Platinum’s a little Rock and Roll
Most Toyota Tundras have their own price points. But the 1794 Edition and Platinum cost just about the same. That said, these trucks don’t share much more than price. With its dark trim and black leather interior, the Tundra Platinum has major rock and roll vibes. Meanwhile, with its American walnut and brown leather interior, the 1794 Edition channels the heart of the country where it was built.
