Toyota’s Small SUVs Ranked by Popularity
Toyota is one of the most popular brands are on the road today. With a wide range of options, from family-friendly crossovers to off-road capable SUVs, Toyota has something for everyone. The combination of reliability, comfort, and convenience has made Toyota one of the most popular auto manufacturers in the world.
GoodCarBadCar has compiled a list of small SUV sales in the U.S. for the year 2022. Toyota has five contenders on the list which include the Toyota bZ4X, Toyota C-HR, Corolla Cross, RAV4, and the Venza. Let’s take a look at where they ranked on the list last month.
Five Toyota small SUVs ranked
Good Car Bad Car’s list looks at last month’s total small SUV sales volumes in the United States by model. For comparison, they analyze the total number of small SUVs sold in the U.S. last month, sorted out by the model. The list contrasts last month’s sales of small SUVs in the U.S. market with the same month a year ago. They also compare the year-to-date sales figures with the corresponding figures from the previous year.
The Toyota RAV4 came in at the number one spot in its category with a total of 33,489 vehicles sold in February 2023, and the same month last year saw sales of 34,609. The Toyota Corolla Cross sold a total of 5,609 vehicles last month and only sold 3,500 for the same month last year, that’s roughly a 60% increase.
The Toyota Venza sold 2,924 and in the same month last year sold 5,128, that’s roughly a 42% decrease in sales. The Toyota CH-R sold 604 last month and 941 for the same time last year, which equates to roughly a 35% decrease. And last but not least, the Toyota bZ4X sold 634 last month and 0 last year due to it being such a new model.
Toyotas vary wildly on the list
It seems odd that Toyota is pretty widespread across the list. It has one in the top spot and one in the bottom five. It’s unclear what the reasoning is here considering Toyota uses roughly the same manufacturing style for all their vehicles.
One explanation could be simply that those who buy Toyotas know the model they like and are loyal to it. The RAV4 has been sold in the U.S. since 1994. The other Toyotas on the list haven’t been around as long, and it takes time to build a following.
Another factor could simply be a supply issue. The chip shortage brought on by the pandemic has left consumers and dealers at the mercy of the supply chain.
Sales of the bZ4X may improve with time
Toyota took its time entering the EV world, and the bZ4X is its first and currently only mass-produced EV. The bZ4X rests on a novel platform created especially for electric vehicles and is the first of seven battery-electric vehicles that Toyota will produce under the “bZ” brand.
As EV demands increase, presumably Toyota will ramp up production of this EV, which will also help with sales. In the future, this little EV may take the place of its older brother the RAV4.
Toyota has been in the automotive industry for decades and produces some of the most reliable and safest vehicles on the market. The automotive market is wildly unpredictable at the moment due to a struggling economy, material shortages, and changes in the way people shop for and buy vehicles, not to mention the effort to incorporate EVs into the market.
However, as they always have, Toyota will meet the challenge and adapt.
