Ford knows it struck Lightning already with its new electric F-150 pickup truck, but more is on the way. CEO Jim Farley said the brand plans to electrify more of its popular pickup trucks soon, which might already be in the works. Ford has filed trademarks for an electric Ford Maverick Lightning and an electric Ford Ranger Lightning, as well as Maverick Thunder and a Ranger Thunder.

The Ford F-150 Thunder was discovered earlier, but it looks like an electric Ford Maverick Thunder and Ranger Thunder are also in the works. If you remember, Ford also renewed the trademark for the Thunderbird name last year as well. It sounds like a lot is going on behind the scenes.

With so many reservations already for the Ford F-150 Lightning, it makes sense to take advantage of its popularity. Carbuzz reports that Ford has a variety of trademark applications out there right now. The Maverick Lightning and Ranger Lightning were registered with the European Union Trademark Office. What indicates an electric Ford Maverick and electric Ford Ranger?

Electrek says the category specifies electric vehicles. “Motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, pick-up trucks, electric vehicles in the nature of automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles, and their structural parts.”

Ford filed for patents under different names. The patent is for the Ford Maverick Thunder and the Ford Ranger Thunder. Ford also specified ‘electric vehicles’ and ‘pickup trucks’ in these categories. This new trademark went along with the F-150 Thunder trademark filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. That means an electric Maverick, Ranger, and more F-150 options are in the works.

The Ford Ranger is one of the only pickup trucks the brand sells outside of the U.S. and is a recognizable nameplate. It would make sense to capitalize on this popularity using the most recognized truck outside the country. Ford knows America is all about the F-150, which explains why it forged the electric truck path with the best-seller.

The Ford F-150 Lightning has been popular enough that adding more electric trucks to the mix makes sense. Ideally, these will be affordable trucks that might be a bit easier to get ahold of. Ford has been on a roll lately, so an official announcement about these new trucks might be around the corner.

Ford has been transparent about having 200,000 reservations for the Lightning electric truck already. The automaker has ramped up production over the last few months to try and ease the three-year backlog, which it seems to be doing.

No matter the timeline, an electric Ford Maverick and Ford Ranger are in the stars for the company. With how popular electric trucks have been in the past year, Ford might have a big advantage if it can offer three varieties in its lineup.
