The price of gas in the U.S. has reached record levels in 2022. Getting the best mileage is now at a premium, and many drivers are looking for high-efficiency cars – namely, hybrid cars. If you’re looking for the best mileage on the market from hybrid cars, TrueCar named its picks for the hybrid cars with the best gas mileage. Below, check out TrueCar’s top picks on the list:

1. 2022 Hyundai Ioniq

MSRP: $24,645

The newest model entry on TrueCar’s list of the hybrid cars with the best gas mileage is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq. The Ioniq first debuted for the 2017 model year and in the 2020 model year saw a redesign with a fresh new look. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq continues that model’s evolution.

The Ioniq comes in four hybrid trims: Blue, SE, SEL, and Limited. The most affordable option – the Hyundai Ioniq Blue – leads the way in fuel efficiency with a combined 59 mpg. All other trims get a combined 55 mpg. With an 11.9-gallon fuel tank, drivers can go nearly 700 miles on one tank of regular unleaded gas.

Hyundai’s warranty on the powertrain (10 years/100,000 miles) and overall (5 years/60,000 miles) is among the best you’ll find, especially at this price point.

Behind the wheel, there is plenty of safety features standard, including automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. Thanks to the hatchback area, there’s lots of cargo space (26.5 cubic feet). Additionally, the ride is quiet and comfortable. Kelley Blue Book reviewers add that it is easy to drive with little learning to get to terms with the hybrid powertrain system.

2. 2022 Toyota Prius

MSRP: $25,650

A staple of the hybrid sedan marketplace, the Toyota Prius has set the bar for the segment for decades and, this year, finds itself near the top of TrueCar’s list of hybrid cars with the best gas mileage. The 2022 model is mostly the same as in 2021, with only the Prius Nightshade Special Edition making a difference for this year.

The Prius has a slightly smaller gas tank than the Ioniq at 11.3 gallons and, at 54 combined mpg, can’t make it quite as far on a full tank. It’s no slouch, though – you can likely get more than 600 miles out of it.

Drivers can enjoy more cargo space (27.4 cubic feet), and TrueCar reviewers call it a smooth ride for up to five passengers. Lots of safety features are standard, so there’s no need to pay extra to get some of the best that Toyota has to offer in safety.

3. 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

MSRP: $21,245

The Hyundai Elantra compact sedan looks more stylish than the Prius but still provides comparable fuel economy ratings, especially if you opt for the hybrid model. The two hybrid trims – the Blue and Limited – offer 50 combined mpg, with the former maxing out at 54 mpg. The fuel tank is smaller than the Prius or the Ioniq at 11 gallons, but that still means you can get 600 miles out of a tank, especially if you do more highway driving.

The hybrid engine gives you more power than either of the hybrids ahead on this list, which shines through in the driving experience. KBB’s reviewers note that the transition between electric and gas power is smooth and quick off the line, like Elantra’s sporty N model.

Without the hatchback, cargo space is less than the Prius or Ioniq (14.2 cubic feet). However, with the high efficiency, sharp looks, and warranties Hyundai includes, TrueCar named it the best hybrid sedan for the 2022 model year.

4. 2022 Honda Insight

MSRP: $26,775

Honda’s hybrid compact sedan, the Honda Insight, is described as a Honda Civic Hybrid and is among TrueCar’s picks for the hybrid cars with the best gas mileage. The 1.5-liter hybrid inline 4-cylinder gives you 52 combined mpg – not far off from the best marks of Hyundai or Toyota’s premier hybrid models. Still, it can’t go quite as far on a full tank, with the smallest fuel capacity on the list so far.

Although it may not get you as far, reviewers assess it as the most fun to drive. The character puts it past the Prius and the Elantra, and it can easily fit five passengers to travel in comfort. TrueCar placed it fifth among the best hybrid sedans for 2022.

5. 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

MSRP: $25,195

The third entry from Hyundai on TrueCar’s list of hybrid cars with the best gas mileage is also the largest sedan in its fleet. The Hyundai Sonata is eight inches longer than the Elantra and more than 500 pounds heavier. That size increase does affect fuel economy; the hybrid Blue trim gets 52 mpg combined, but the other two – the most popular SEL and Limited – get 47 combined mpg.

However, the larger dimensions also mean you get a bigger gas tank at 13.2 gallons. With the Hyundai Sonata Blue trim, you can go nearly as far as the Ioniq on one tank. It also boasts the most powerful engine on the list so far at 192 horsepower. Though it’s not as fun behind the wheel as some competitors, the safety features and Hyundai warranties make it worth the lower price tag than other mid-size sedans.

6. 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

MSRP: $21,200

This compact sedan is one of the top-selling cars in the world. The hybrid model is also one of TrueCar’s picks for hybrid cars with the best gas mileage. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid comes in one trim: the LE. The LE has one of the lowest MSRPs on the list and some of the best mpg figures – 52 combined with an 11.4-gallon tank. TrueCar did describe the 2.0-liter engine as “buzzy,” though.

As a part of the Toyota hybrid line, it enjoys the full array of safety features, including many driver-assist systems. There’s plenty of room inside as well for passengers in the front and back seat. However, TrueCar does say it’s not as fun to drive as some of its competitors.

7. 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid

MSRP: $26,420

Toyota’s popular midsize sedan, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, also made TrueCar’s list of the hybrid cars with the best gas mileage. It comes in multiple trims options: SE, LE, XLE, and XSE. All four have the same power output – 208 horsepower from a 2.5-liter inline-four hybrid engine – but fuel economy is slightly different. The LE trim gets 52 mpg combined, while the other three averaged 46 mpg.

Like the Corolla, the new Toyota Camry Hybrid is spacious inside, with enough space for five passengers to sit comfortably. Additionally, you get the host of safety features included in most all Toyota models. However, all-wheel drive is not offered on the hybrid Camry models, and KBB reviewers mention braking can be a bit forceful due to the brake energy regeneration function.
