If you feel like the number of electric vehicles (EVs) has exploded in the past year, you’re right. Today there are more choices than ever, and with battery range and vehicle prices on par with gasoline power vehicles, EVs make a lot of practical sense. The challenge now is picking the right EV to suit your needs. To help with that conundrum, TrueCar recently provided its rankings of the best electric vehicles. Their system evaluates cars in categories like price, comfort, amenities, range, and technology, as well as other factors. Using that information, we’ve put together a list of the top five EVs for 2022 according to TrueCar. 

6. The 2022 Audi e-tron S forgoes quirky EV styling

The Audi e-tron S is a great choice for people who want an EV without quirky EV styling. Starting at $88,595, the five-seat crossover combines increased horsepower with better handling and performance compared to the standard e-tron. In that way, it’s like every other Audi S model. What makes it different, of course, is the nearly silent driving experience.

There are downsides to this EV, however. It looks similar to a standard Audi SUV model. Meaning, there’s nothing to show off your green car creds. Additionally, the SUV is heavy. “While weight is neither good nor bad, it can be an issue if the driver feels the weight,” TrueCar added. 

“The other not-so-wonderful is the e-tron’s range on a charge: 208 miles when fitted with 20-inch wheels and significantly less with larger wheels,” the publication continued.

5. The 2023 Genesis GV60 is stocked with spoils

There’s a lot to like about the 2023 Genesis GV60. Labeled an all-electric premium crossover by TrueCar, the outlet reports this Genesis model is “absolutely crammed with technology and priced to make rivals sweat.” TrueCar isn’t wrong, either.

With a starting price of $58,890, the 2023 Genesis GV60 is cheaper than competitors like Tesla Model Y and Volvo C40 Recharge. It also comes stocked to the brim with tech-savvy features, including a vehicle-entry facial recognition system, two 12.3” HD displays, and an available Bang & Olufsen Premium Audio system with 17-speakers. 

4. The 2021 Polestar 2 is one of the best electric vehicles

Polestar used to be Volvo’s in-house performance tuner but is now a separate entity within the Geely Auto portfolio. It’s a well-equipped, elegant-looking hatchback sedan. Performance is fierce with quick acceleration and excellent handling. 

It doesn’t have quite the same level of luxury as the Audi e-tron, but at $61,200, it’s less expensive but still well equipped with high-tech safety and infotainment features. 

Like most EVs, the heavy mass affects handling, but the Polestar matches up well with vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3. The interior is on the tight side, with a small backseat. But, overall, it’s classy and well-designed. Range, however, is estimated at 233 miles, which is lower than other models on this list, but about average for a performance-oriented EV.   

3. The 2022 Tesla Model Y is a “leader in the EV revolution”

The Model Y highlights everything Tesla is known for – impressive performance, cutting-edge technology, and the longest battery range of any EV, all wrapped up in sleek styling. Consider all of this, and it’s no surprise the EV SUV made TrueCar’s list of the best electric vehicles. 

Unfortunately, that’s also underscored by everything Tesla’s critics love to point out. Build quality can be hit, or miss, and service can be slow and indifferent. The other negative is the tiny third row, which is barely inhabitable for pets or small children. But those quibbles fall by the wayside thanks to the performance, range, and array of technology offered by the Model Y. 

2. The 2022 Kia EV6 holds its own against competitors 

Kia hit a home run with the EV6, the company’s first true electric vehicle. It more than holds its own against other popular EVs. Not to mention, it features all-wheel drive and, according to TrueCar, is “is estimated to deliver 116 MPGe in the city and 94 MPGe on the highway.” 

The 2022 Kia EV6 is offered in 3 trim levels, including the most popular Wind AWD trim, which starts at $52,695. The interior room is adequate for five people, but tall drivers will wish for more headroom, TrueCar predicts. Cargo room is also on the small side, so people who need lots of space might want to look at another EV on this list. However, the EV6 presents itself well as a fun, capable crossover that just happens to be an EV. 

1. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the best EV according to TrueCar

The handsome and futuristic Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the best all-around EVs available. It’s also the best electric vehicle on TrueCar’s list. It’s roomy and comfortable, while also offering decent performance and range. It doesn’t stand out in any one area, but like a great utility player, it does everything well. 

The most popular trim level is the SEL AWD, reports TrueCar. Starting at $51,045, it comes standard with all-wheel drive and a long list of standard luxury, technology, and driver safety features. 

If there’s one knock on the Ioniq 5, it’s the lack of performance compared to other EVs. It’s not as fast or fun to drive as other models, including the Kia EV6. But that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best EVs on the market for anyone wanting a well-rounded, family-oriented vehicle.
