Top Gear is, without question, THE quintessential automotive media. To be clear, I am only referring to the period with the holy triumvirate of foolishness, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. Anyone trying to recreate the antics of these three will always fall short, including the BBC continuation. But none have fallen short quite like the pair of Porsche-driving YouTubers who landed a Jail sentence and suspended licenses by attempting a ripoff Top Gear Video. 

Don’t try this at home

According to CarScoops, YouTube people, David Murray and Timur Khayrov, were planning a trip to a track day at Oulton Park, Cheshire, but had decided to set off a day early and head into North Wales. They set off in their pair of Porsches – a Porsche 911 GT3 and a Porsche 718 Boxster – heading to “EVO Triangle” – a famous stretch of good riving roads. Finding that the route was littered with speed cameras, they decided to alter course to B4501, near Cerrigydrudion in Conwy, and the B4391 in Gwynedd.

The lads shot a video of their spirited drive. The incriminating YouTube video shows the pair lashing corners and ultimately hitting speeds of 116 mph in the Porsche 718 Boxster and 105 mph in the Porsche 911 GT3. 

How did the YouTubers get caught? 

Well, it turns out that when you post videos of yourself doing crimes, it’s pretty easy to get caught. The video of the two driving their Porsches was posted online, where it was spotted by an inspector from the Greater Manchester Police force. The officer subsequently reported it to North Wales Police. 

Khayrov not only piloted the white Porsche 911 GT3, but he also is a pilot in real life. In court, he claims he had some “misplaced enthusiasm” and was upset with himself for driving so recklessly. He went on to say that this stunt was out of character, according to CarScoops. 

Murray, the other partner in crime, appeared to show the same remorse by admitting that that drive was “the stupidest thing he has ever done in his life.” 

“The aggravating factor is the filming of the driving,” said Judge Nicola Jones while sentencing the pair. “It may not have been your intention to encourage others to come to Snowdonia and drive in a dangerous manner, but that’s what you did,” she said.

Can you go to jail for speeding? 

You sure can. Both Porsche drivers were sentenced to eight months in jail and suspended licenses for 18 months. However, the two wannabe Top Gear presenters got their jail sentences differed for 12 months. If that weren’t enough, both also scored 200 hours of community service, must pay a $910 fine, and are required to retake their driving test in order to get their licenses back.

I think it’s fair to say that the honorable Nicola Jones threw the book at ol’ Donnie and Cylde. Although it was not court-ordered, as far as we know, both lads sold their Porsches as they await jail. I hope the knockoff Top Gear video was worth it.
