If you’re searching for your next full-size truck, switching to all-electric might be an option. For many reviewers like U.S. News & World Report, the pickup at the bottom of the list is there for many reasons. For example, the 2023 GMC Hummer EV has the highest starting price of any model in its class. As a result, U.S. News’ worst electric truck is also the most expensive. What else makes it worse than its rivals?

Each year, U.S. News & World Report experts make a list of the best models in each class. As a result, the bottom of the list discloses the worst model the reviewers think consumers can get. While it doesn’t have an all-electric rankings list, three models appear on the full-size truck rankings. Of the trio of EVs, the 2023 GMC Hummer EV is by far the last place all-electric option. In addition to electric rivals, it fell short of nearly every gas-powered model on the list. A big part of the reason it’s so low is the starting price, which is the most expensive.

The worst offense of the Hummer EV is the starting price, which is astronomical. Buying a “base model” costs at least $87,000. Other trims exceed the six-figure mark by a lot, with the Edition 1 reaching $110,000 for the 2022 model year. The official pricing for the 2023 version isn’t available yet, but most expect fewer trims at a higher price. Car and Driver estimates a range of $87,000-$107,000 for three trim levels.

What else is wrong with the GMC Hummer EV?

According to U.S. News, the GMC Hummer EV earned just a 7.7 out of 10 overall. Within the full-size truck rankings, that’s enough to put it ahead of the Nissan Titan. Additionally, the pickup falls far short of other electric models, like the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning. In fact, the Rivian R1T is tied for first place with the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 in the full-size truck category with a 9.0/10. Behind the first-place trio is the F-150 Lightning EV, which scored a mildly worse 8.9.

Way down the list in eighth place is GMC’s EV. The publication listed a few pros and cons of driving the new model. For example, fuel efficiency isn’t great, even for an all-electric model. Next, its payload and towing ratings lag behind competitors. The maximum towing capacity is 7,500 pounds, and can haul up to 1,480 pounds.

In comparison, the F-150 Lightning can tow 10,000 pounds and haul 2,000. Finally, the wind and road noise heard from inside the cabin while driving at high speeds is tremendous, which is annoying on long drives. Obviously, the enormous price tag is another downside of the Hummer.

GMC Hummer EV: The worst and most expensive electric truck

In conclusion, there are a few things the 2023 GMC Hummer EV does worse than its opponents. The best electric trucks provide a long driving range, massive capability, and a decent starting price. GMC’s offering lacks in those ways, but especially in being affordable. The starting price for all trims is massive and unrealistic for the average truck owner. When customers search for a new pickup and decide on an EV, it’s unlikely they’ll choose the most expensive, less capable model.
