Given its name, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT has a tremendous amount of expectations to live up to. While the standard Mach-E began arriving at dealerships at the end of 2020, its purpose is slightly different than the GT. While the standard model is still quite quick, this new top trim is essentially Ford flexing its electric muscle.

According to Ford’s latest press release, this ultra-quick model goes on sale this week. However, it comes at a considerable premium over the standard model, thanks to a $59,000 base price. Will this latest release be enough to compete with the best Tesla can produce?

How fast is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT?

Since the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is all about speed, let’s start there. Power comes from two magnetic dual electric motors, giving this EV an all-wheel drive. Total output is rated at 480 peak horsepower and 600 lb-ft. The keyword there is “peak” since the carmaker calculates these figures at peak battery power.

If that’s not enough power, you can opt for the Performance Edition trim. While you still get 480 hp, your torque figure gets bumped up to 634 lb-ft. For context, this is around 214 lb-ft more than a V8-equipped Mustang Mach 1.

With that much power, the Mach-E GT reaches 60 mph in an estimated time of 3.8 seconds, while the Performance Edition takes 3.5 seconds. You’re looking at 250 miles in the GT and 235 miles in the Performance Edition in terms of range.

A similarly-priced Tesla Model Y has an estimated 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a total range of 303 miles. As a result, the big differentiator between these EVs will likely be their driving dynamics.

The GT’s improvements go beyond outright speed

When talking about EVs, it is very easy to get swept up in 0-60 times and outright speed. However, it seems the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is trying to become a track-capable EV. While this remains to be seen, the GT certainly seems to have the right bones.

For starters, you get a set of large Brembo calipers with 385 mm rotors upfront. 20-inch wheels come as standard now, and get larger 245/45R20 summer tires by Pirelli. While the American carmaker doesn’t disclose which exact model it’ll use, they should be a much-needed improvement over the standard economy-focused rubber.

In terms of suspension, the Mach-E GT features MagneRide Suspension, which the brand claims can make adjustments as quickly as 1,000 times per second. The goal here is smooth ride quality with capable handling characteristics.

How much is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT?

Since the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is the top trim level, it won’t surprise you to learn that it comes at a premium. While a standard base model starts at $42,895, the GT starts at a hair under $60,000. Keep in mind. This is also before you add any optional extras. If you want the faster Performance Edition, you’re looking at a base price of $65,000.

This puts Ford’s latest EV in the crosshairs of the $60,990 Tesla Model Y Performance. However, the big differentiator is that the Mach-E is still eligible for a $7,500 tax credit while the Model Y is not.
