The 2022 Lexus ES is one of the best hybrid-electric cars on the market today. While many people are clambering for premium EVs, the humble hybrid shouldn’t be overlooked. This specific hybrid has been featured as the best luxury hybrid for four years running, and there are a handful of good reasons why.

Lexus ES pricing and trim levels

Lexus lists the entry-level 2022 ES 300h with a starting price of $42,975. It’s one of the cheapest luxury hybrid cars and a good option for buyers who don’t have a huge budget—but want to feel like they do. The Lexus ES 300h F Sport starts at $46,525 and builds on the base model’s standard features.

Up near the top of the range, the well-equipped 2022 Lexus ES 300h Luxury trim starts at $48,375, and the fully-loaded ES 300h Ultra Luxury starts at $52,155.

Like its sibling company, Toyota, Lexus cars are known for reliability. Choosing this best luxury hybrid could be smarter than buying a more popular hybrid that may not last as long.

Does the 2022 Lexus ES Hybrid qualify for tax credits?

Unfortunately, no. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, only one Lexus model is eligible to receive federal tax credits, and that’s the NX Plug-In Hybrid. The 2022 ES Hybrid doesn’t qualify for tax credits.

Fuel economy and range for the 2022 Lexus ES Hybrid

The 2022 ES Hybrid comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine good for 215 horsepower. Even with that peppy powertrain, the ES luxury hybrid sedan offers 43 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. That isn’t necessarily the highest among hybrid cars, but it’s pretty impressive for a luxury car.

With 44 mpg combined and a 13.2-gallon fuel tank, you can expect about 580 miles of travel from a full tank of gas. (Results may vary.)

“Top-notch interior amenities” and affordability set this luxury EV apart

Lexus doesn’t get as much credit as it deserves as a luxury brand. It doesn’t have the flash and flair of a Mercedes or the performance chops of a BMW, but the Lexus ES Hybrid offers a lot for the price. Let me remind you—nearly all of its models cost under $50,000.

The 2022 ES Hybrid has a beautifully appointed interior, with class-leading legroom and leather-trimmed seats. Its new touchscreen infotainment screen is simple to use, and its Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 suite of driver-assistance features is a nice touch.

U.S. News calls it “a top-notch ride for daily cruising and long-haul trips,” and the Lexus ES Hybrid has won this specific award four years running.

How to pick the best hybrid-electric car in 2022

U.S. News rated the Lexus ES Hybrid as one of the best hybrid-electric cars in 2022 based on its premium interior features, smooth driving performance, impressive fuel economy, and affordable price. However, the Lexus ES has historically been the most-complained-about Lexus car.

When shopping for a hybrid or electric car, consider all of the above, plus passenger and cargo space and charging time and range. Can you make it with an all-electric vehicle? Or is a hybrid like the Lexus ES the better choice for you?
