Can a Used Infiniti G37 Make a Good Sleeper Car?
The Infiniti G37 was the brand’s flagship sports car that was produced from 2008 to 2015. Its sleek aesthetics and powerful V6 engine made it one of the most popular sports cars in the past decade. It was also easy to modify, thanks to plenty of aftermarket support.
Plenty of used Infiniti G37 can be had for a song nowadays, and enthusiasts are taking advantage of their cheap price points. But for anyone looking to modify one of these attractive sports cars, does the G37 make a good sleeper car?
What is a sleeper car?
A sleeper car is a sedan, hatchback, or even an SUV that doesn’t look fast but is. J.D. Power notes, “The classic example of an attainable sleeper car is the Volkswagen GTI. You take a practical upright body style and give it a little extra power, a sport-tuned suspension, and a nicer set of wheels.” A sleeper car is essentially a simple-looking car that performs like a more expensive sports car.
Can the Infiniti G37 be considered a sleeper?
The Infiniti G37 came in a sedan and coupe body style when it was in production. In our opinion, the sedan body style could be seen as a sleeper straight out of the box. Its four-door architecture and subdued looks wouldn’t turn too many heads.
However, there’s a 3.7-liter V6 engine under the hood that pumps out 328 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough power to propel the car up to 60 mph from a standstill in only 5.2 seconds and down the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds.
That’s very quick for a normal street car, especially one with four doors and room for five adults. The sleeper look goes away a little with the coupe body style. The two-door version has the same engine and performance figures but looks a little more aggressive.
That said, if some engine and suspension modifications were done to either G37 option while keeping the car looking stock, then it could be considered a true sleeper.
The most common Infiniti G37 modifications
Anyone looking to modify an Infiniti G37 and make a true sleeper out of the car is in luck. There are plenty of aftermarket parts for the car that range from engine and suspension upgrades to fancy wheels.
For suspension modifications, the folks at Drifted suggest the following coilovers:
- KW Variant 3 coilovers
- BC Racing BR series
- HKS Hipermax S
Some of the most popular performance modifications include a cold air intake from Stillen Motorsports, an exhaust system from Invidia, and a test pipe to delete the catalytic converter and open up the exhaust flow.
For more power, a turbocharger or supercharger can be installed onto the engine to uncork more ponies. It’s not uncommon for some Infiniti G37s to push around 600-700 hp using forced induction.
With that kind of power and a stock-looking exterior, the Infiniti G37 can be a true sleeper whether it’s in its coupe or sedan form. It’s worth noting, though, that the six-speed manual option should be chosen for the most performance potential. However, an all-wheel drive configuration with an automatic transmission is available.
How much does an Infiniti G37 cost today?
Considering the Infiniti G37 is 10 to 15 years old, depending on the model year chosen, many used examples have a price range of $7,000 to $15,000. That pricing depends on the car’s age, condition, and location. We recommend choosing the lowest mileage and the newest example to ensure the most reliability and power.
After a few upgrades, there’s no doubt that nearly any G37 could be a sleeper car.
