A Used Maserati Ghibli is a Cheap Four-Door Ferrari on a Budget
As Italian cars go, both Maserati and Ferrari are iconic brands. But even with depreciation, there are scant few Ferrari models that go for less than $50k. However, depreciation has hit older Maserati models like a truck. So much so that today, a used Maserati Ghibli with a Ferrari engine costs less than $20k.
Ferrari built Maserati engines until 2022
While Maserati, as a brand, has been under the Stellantis umbrella for some time, Ferrari supplied its engines as recently as 2022. In fact, every Maserati from 2002 to 2022 featured a Ferrari-built engine under the hood.
From the 3.0-liter V6 in the Ghibli to the 4.2-liter V8 in the Quattroporte, Ferrari engines provide legendary performance for these four-door luxury cars.
Used Maserati pricing in 2023
Unfortunately for drivers who bought them new, Maserati depreciation can only be described as a free fall. In 2023, a 2014 Maserati Ghibli that cost $71,000 new can be found for about $18,000 today. That’s Toyota Corolla money for an Italian luxury car with a Ferrari engine under the hood.
Look back a few more years and the vaunted Quattroporte finds itself in similar territory. At the time, a 2008 Quattroporte with a Ferrari V8 carried a six-figure price tag at a minimum. Today, those cars with modest mileage sit in the same $15,000 to $20,000 price bracket. But even immaculate versions can go for less than $40,000. Not bad for Ferrari power and Maserati style.
Are used Maserati models reliable?
As much as we’d love to say that a used Maserati for $15,000 is an unbeatable bargain, you’ll undoubtedly have some headaches to deal with along the way. Basic items like window regulators and truck latches are common issues with these Italian luxury cars. And while the ZF transmission itself is typically excellent, many owners report issues with worn clutches that are expensive to replace.
That said, the Ferrari-built engine holds up with regular maintenance. The problem is that maintenance for these cars is costly. Timing chain guides are frequent issues with the Quattroporte’s V8. Letting that issue continue for too long will lead to misfires and even engine failure.
The V6 is a touch more reliable and less costly to maintain, making it a more viable option for those who want a Ferrari on a budget. That said, suspension and brake problems plague these cars, and the ever-present threat of rust means they aren’t a great choice for northern climates.
Luxury of a Maserati Ghibli with Ferrari performance
If maintenance isn’t a concern, a Maserati Ghibli is an enticing prospect. Four-door luxury and Ferrari performance are a stellar combination to experience. Sure, the Ghibli lacks the fit and finish of a BMW 5 Series, but it more than compensates with personality.
There is a verve to even a used Ghibli that is hard to ignore. And considering the bargain price of these Maserati models, it’s hard to imagine a cheaper way to enjoy Ferrari engine power these days.
No more Ferrari engines in Maserati models
As of 2023, Maserati and Fiat Chrysler provide engines for Maserati vehicles. Unfortunately, that means the days of getting new Ferrari power on the (relatively) cheap are over. But in the used market, there are still plenty of affordable options out there.
