Few compact cars are as good as the Mazda3. Not only is that true for the 2021 Mazda3, but it’s also true for the older model years. So here’s a look at why it may be a good idea to choose a used 2016 Mazda3 because it can take you almost anywhere you want to go.

What makes a good car great

There are many factors to consider when it comes to what makes a car great for everyday driving, Consumer Reports explains. For many folks, the most important thing is the price, and to that end, brand-new cars won’t cut it. That’s where used cars come in, which are almost always a good idea because they mean big savings on the purchase price.

Other than price, though, there are also factors that’ll affect a car’s practicality. For example, fuel economy is important because, one way or another, that car will rack up some miles, and it’s in the driver’s best interest not to spend that much money on gas. Another important factor to consider is comfort.

Many people spend a lot of time in their car, whether for commuting or road trips. So it’s a good idea to find a vehicle that will provide, at the very least, a smooth and comfortable ride. Unsurprisingly, the Mazda3 meets those criteria and more. In fact, it appears on Consumer Reports’ list “Best Used Cars and SUVs for City Driving.” 

Why a used Mazda3 is excellent for driving

Off the bat, unlike its small-car competitors, the Mazda3 focuses on the driving experience. To be clear, because a used 2016 Mazda3 can cost between $13,000 and $17,000, it won’t be a Mustang. But it’ll be a reliable, practical choice for all sorts of driving.

That’s because the Mazda3’s 155-hp engine gives it 23 mpg in the city and an astounding 45 mpg on the highway, for 33 mpg combined. That’s great highway fuel economy, and though its city gas mileage isn’t spectacular, its small size means parking is a breeze. Plus, with its punchy engine and agile handling, the Mazda3 is fun to drive, Consumer Reports says.

The 2016 Mazda3 at a glance

As far as the other factors go, the Mazda3 performs well, too. Although it offers an average ride for its class, it does come in a hatchback configuration. The five-door hatchback is as fun to drive as the Mazda3 sedan but has less space for groceries or luggage. 

That said, the Mazda3 is still a compact car, so it isn’t as spacious as an SUV. As a result, its rear seats can be a bit cramped for passengers, Consumer Reports says. But cramped or not, the Mazda3, like most Mazda models, is reliable. As such, owners who properly maintain this car probably won’t have to deal with it breaking down in the middle of a road trip.

It’s also relatively safe, with advanced features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and collision mitigation.

However, a 2016 Mazda3 isn’t as well-equipment with technology and infotainment features as later models. But that’s expected because many smart features became standard only recently, Consumer Reports points out. Regardless, the 2016 Mazda3 still has an infotainment system with a large touchscreen, but expect “frustrating controls,” CR says.

But overall, a used 2016 Mazda3 is a smart choice for city driving, thanks to its size. And its excellent handling and fuel economy make it a great pick highway driving, too.
