Vintage Met Gala: Kacey Musgraves Barbie Pink Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Remember when Kacey Musgraves showed up to the 2019 Met Gala in a Barbie Corvette? We remember, too. The 650 hp Corvette was merely an accessory for the night, but the arrival made an impact on viewers. The future classic car was a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 wrapped in a matching magenta color, fit for a country music queen.
Kacey Musgraves arrived at the Met Gala in a Barbie pink Chevrolet Corvette
Sure, the Met Gala is all about fashion. That didn’t stop Musgraves from showing up in the coolest Corvette she could find. The country superstar and Grammy-winning artist showed up in an all-pink Moschino look. The theme for 2019 was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” and a Barbie pink Corvette fits the bill. What else is known about the Z06 Corvette?
According to Car and Driver, the Corvette was wrapped in a high-quality pink wrap. Pink isn’t exactly a factory color for Chevrolet, but that didn’t stop this vehicle. Much like Barbie, Musgraves merely used the Z06 Corvette as an accessory. Barbie always had her trusty pink sunglasses, blow dryer purse, and convertible Corvette.
With stock rims, an all-black interior, and classic styling other than the color, the Barbie Corvette lets Musgraves sparkle and shine.
Barbie didn’t just drive a Corvette, she had Jeeps, Porsches, and even a Ferrari
Barbie had a variety of vehicles. When the first Barbie Corvette came out in the 1970s, it became her signature vehicle of choice. You can still buy a variety of Barbie Corvettes to this day. But don’t limit her to the Chevrolet Corvette.
Barbie also had a Jeep Wrangler, Porsche 911, Ford Mustang, Ferrari 328, Chevy Bel-Air, Rolls-Royce Corniche, and even a motorhome. Fisher-Price has a Power Wheels Barbie Jeep Wrangler for sale at Bed Bath & Beyond right now for $320. Not a bad deal.
Even if you aren’t personally paying attention to what Barbie drives these days, she apparently has much influence over the automotive world.
Don’t overlook the Austin-Healey 3000 MKII
While Barbie was certainly famous for her pink Corvette, don’t overlook the Austin-Healey 3000 MKII. This was actually the first car Barbie was known for back when Mattel decided Barbie even needed a car. The 3000 MKII didn’t even have a top, but what teenage doll from Wisconsin needs a covered vehicle anyway?
Imagine if Kacey Musgraves showed up to the Met Gala in an Austin-Healey 3000 MKII instead of a pink Chevrolet Corvette? Talk about campy. Anyway, Barbie, whose real name was Barbara Millicent Roberts, got her first car back in 1962. That Austin-Healey served her well until she upgraded to the Corvette 14 years later. Talk about reserved.
Since then, the Chevrolet Corvette has served Barbie and America well. No one showed up to the Met Gala in a colorful Chevy this year, but perhaps next year someone will bring it back.
