Forget Wolfsburg, This Volkswagen EV Is Built in Tennessee
Volkswagen owns and operates one of the largest, if not still the largest car manufacturing site in the world in Wolfsburg, Germany. The car-building community there builds many of the brand’s icons, like the Golf and Tiguan. However, American buyers with their sights set on the Volkswagen ID.4 won’t find a “made in Wolfsburg” decal on their EV. No, the American-market Volkswagen ID.4 rolls off the line in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In fact, it took a top spot in the American-made index without a domestic badge on its grille.
The Volkswagen ID.4 EV is a product of the brand’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant
Volkswagen might run the Wolfsburg plant like a car-building city, but that doesn’t mean the industrial giant doesn’t operate other factories to meet global demand. Enter Volkswagen Chattanooga, over 353,000 square feet of assembly, and the home of the ID.4 EV. The ID.4, which starts at around $41,160, offers up to 291 miles of all-electric range.
Frankly, the Volkswagen ID.4’s American-built status earns it some bragging rights and incentives. For starters, the final assembly requirements for the coveted federal tax credit mandate that a vehicle meets a North American production requirement. As such, the Volkswagen EV qualifies for the full $7,500 credit.
Moreover, the Tennessee-built ID.4 took the No. 3 spot on the Cars.com 2024 American-Made Index. It out-ranked the Tesla Model S and Honda Odyssey for its place in the top five. Interestingly enough, Tesla is the only American brand in the top five most American-made vehicles. Check out the rankings below.
