Sometimes certain model cars occupy space in one particular vehicle segment. Over time, with the right enhancements, the same model can qualify for more than one category. In the case of the latest Volkswagen Golf GTI, it is commonly known as a hot hatch just as much as it’s known for peppy performance.

The GTI is more performance-based than the standard Golf but not quite as hot as the Golf R. So, could it technically be a sports car? Or does its non-traditional look mean it’s not qualified to have an official sports car designation?

Let’s first make a proper introduction. According to Volkswagen, the Golf GTI made its hot hatch debut in 1976. The 2022 model year marks its eight-gen transformation. This latest iteration is said to embody the trusted Golf formula, adding more refinement, style, and a “playful performance” dynamic.

Consumer Reports shares some basic details, including an estimated price range of $29,880 to $39,130. The Golf GTI is estimated to earn an overall mpg of 28 and high marks among critics for its smooth transmission, quick braking, and even more power.

The 2022 model harnesses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that taps 241 hp, a 13 hp increase from the previous version. In terms of performance, you’ll love chomping pavement from 0 to 60 in an impressive 6.4 seconds.

There might be a few dislikes. Some cite the Golf GTI as having confusing controls, including the infotainment system, which Edmunds calls “frustrating.” And again, if you’re looking for super-screaming fast sports car power, the GTI is rated as a more middle-of-the-road and fun kind of performer. But the question remains. Is it fast enough, and does it have the looks to be a sports car?

Traditional definitions of a sports car

NADA Guides provides some context about what officially defines a sports car. Its interpretation is any “small, low car with a high-powered engine.” It also suggests these models usually “seat two people.” But the dictionary version of what separates a sports car from other cars goes further to describe “an automobile equipped for racing.” You’ll see other requirements when you explore different dictionary definitions like aerodynamics, low centers of gravity, precision steering, suspension, and high-speed capability. As Road and Track point out, no one really knows how to define a sports car anymore.

While the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI doesn’t necessarily fit into these “official definitions” because of its compact car design, many still consider it a qualified sports car. It’s winning sports-car-themed awards, including Forbes‘ Sports Car of the Year Award. And no one is questioning this car’s ability to perform like a sports car, including the insurance industry. Jerry points out that the Golf GTI does qualify as a sports car, translating to higher risk and higher premiums.

Nothing more thrilling than the Volkswagen Golf R

As fun and sporty as the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is, and even with its sports car distinctions, VW fans who want mind-blowing performance can opt to upgrade to the Golf R instead. If you really want a sports car experience from your Volkswagen, the Volkswagen Golf R delivers in every respect. Expect more power, thrills, and guts than the already sporty Golf GTI.

You’ll have more power with the Golf R, with 315 hp from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine. You’ll also have a new all-wheel drive system and touch controls for a performance feel from behind the wheel. And you’ll pay more with the MSRP range of $44,090 to $44,890.

So, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is a hot hatch and sports car. It may just be the Goldilocks of Golf models, with the right amount of performance, fun, comfort, convenience, and safety, all in one punchy little ride.
