We don’t have the best news for Toyota 4Runner fans. We’ve all been waiting for the next generation to arrive, and it looks like we could be waiting for a few extra months. New rumors suggest that the 2025 Toyota 4Runner will be redesigned, not the 2024 model.

Updated on 06/15/2023 for freshness.

When could the Toyota 4Runner be redesigned?

The next-generation Toyota 4Runner could arrive in 2024 or 2025. While some people expected to see the new model in 2023, there’s not much information to back it up. The new 4Runner may have been delayed until 2025.

Toyota has a lot going on right now with the new Land Cruiser, Prius, and Grand Highlander. There might not be time to add the updated 4Runner in the mix yet. The primary focus could be on global models instead of options primarily sold in North America.

According to Gear Patrol, Toyota could be prepping for the launch of the Land Cruise Prado in America, which could push the 4Runner back. Now the Toyota Land Cruiser is officially returning to America. The Land Cruiser could really steal sales from the 4Runner.

Plus, the new Toyota Tacoma just came out, and it’s not exactly moving, yet. We don’t know when it will enter production or how much it will cost. We saw tons of spy photos and teasers leading up to the release, but clues about the 4Runner remain scarce.

Why would the 2025 4Runner be delayed?

Multiple factors could cause the 2025 Toyota 4Runner to be delayed. The ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage and other supply chain issues have impacted the entire automotive industry.

Without chips, vehicles lose electronic features for climate controls, cameras, cylinder deactivation, and safety features. Plus, rubber for tires, foam for seats, materials for hard tops, and upholstery have supply constraints.

Also, the new TNGA-F platform was in short supply. This may have caused each new model release to be postponed by a year. Both the new Tacoma and 4Runner will ride on a smaller, modified version of this platform.

Last but not least, Toyota can afford to wait. The Toyota 4Runner is still incredibly popular, with too much demand to keep up with.

But on a positive note, since the new Tacoma and 4Runner are expected to share parts and engines, it might be easy to quickly pump new 4Runner models out.

How much power could the sixth-generation 4Runner have?

The next generation Toyota 4Runner should leave the current 4.0-liter V6 engine with 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque behind for something more fuel efficient. The outdated five-speed automatic transmission will probably be replaced as well.

With the 2024 Tacoma, you get a standard turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. On higher trim levels, it provides 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Tacoma Hybrid pairs the turbo engine with an electric motor and battery pack to generate 326 hp and 465 b-ft of torque.

An electric 4Runner model could arrive later as part of a mid-cycle refresh or the seventh generation. The 4Runner. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma went hybrid but not electric. Also, the engines could provide a different amount of power if the 4Runner weighs more or less.

We are tracking the six-generation Toyota 4Runner for updates, so stay tuned for the latest news.
