The BMW i8 was the brand’s flagship supercar up until this year when the brand decided to discontinue its production. While it’s sad to see such a beautiful car leave the market, you can still find them on the used car market pretty easily. And since the power of depreciation rests for no car, the good news is that you can now pick up a used BMW i8 for around $55,000.

The BMW i8 was practically two cars in one

The BMW i8 made its debut in 2014 and stayed very true to its concept form. It’s sleek exterior and futuristic curves made it look like a car from a “Tron” movie and upon closer inspection, anyone would find that the i8 was the epitome of BMW’s “Efficient Dynamics” philosophy. We say this because the i8 was practically two cars in one: A really fast supercar and a plug-in hybrid.

That’s right, in addition to having the ability to blow the doors off almost any car that you pull up next to at a stoplight, the BMW i8 could also be charged up to run on all-electric mode for up to around 20 miles until the gasoline/hybrid powertrain kicked in. But don’t get it wrong, this car isn’t your typical i3 hybrid, in fact, the i8 has a carbon-fiber-reinforced body and aluminum chassis to reduce weight. And despite its butterfly doors, the BMW i8 is definitely a supercar that can be easily driven every day.

The BMW i8’s powertrain is unique

Aside from its looks, the i8 sets itself apart from nearly every other car on the market with its unique powertrain. The heart of the setup is made up of a turbocharged 1.5-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine that is mated to a pair of electric motors powered by an 11.6-kWh battery pack.

The gas engine powers the rear wheels is paired to an electric motor-generator that’s energized by the battery pack and powers the front wheels. It’s a little confusing, but just know that it’s an all-wheel-drive car that produces a combined output of 374 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, which enables the i8 to reach 60 mph in about 4.4 seconds.

The i8 isn’t as quick as other supercars, but still fun to drive

And while that 0 to 60 time isn’t as quick as competitors like the Audi R8 or the Nissan GT-R, it’s still quick enough to impress you and your one unsuspecting passenger. Speaking of passengers, there are back seats in the BMW i8 but don’t expect anyone taller than the average toddler to be able to sit back there. If anything, those rear seats can be used as storage since the only other true storage compartment is at the rear of the car and can only hold something as big as a backpack, or one piece of carry-on luggage.

Whatever the BMW i8 is, it’s still a used-car bargain

No matter which way you look at the BMW i8, it’s a stunning supercar that deserves the attention that it gets and has enough technology and speed to back up its $147,000 price tag when new. However, if you’re looking in the used market, you can currently find older 2014 and 2015 models currently selling in the $55,000 to $60,000 range, which makes it much more attainable. Considering that’s a fraction of the original MSRP as well as what you get for the money, we would say that the BMW i8 is one of the best used-car bargains currently on the market.
